Unbelievable! 3 to 4 ft of hail.

Driving on hail is like walking on marbles. I have heard it said that the most dangerous thing on earth is a Texan on ice

That isn't quite as uncommon as you'd think. 7-8 years ago, we had a similar storm just southwest of Stratford (about 60 miles north of this one), and it also had 3-5 foot layers of hail. It took several days to melt it all even though it was up in the 70's & 80's the next few days.

It had highway 54 closed for several weeks - mainly because the huge rainfall (6-10 inches that night) filled a huge playa lake that covered the road - not from the hail itself. There were huge floating islands of ice in the new lake for several days.

Not long after that, we also had a terrible storm with a lot of hail that washed a car off the road southeast of town - on prairie land so flat you'd say it could never flood - and even though it wasn't that cold that night, the two people it washed out of the car died of exposure from all the hail in the freezing water.
