CAN I GET AWAY WITH IT?

Is it possible to get ok/good end results using rattle can spray paint on a very small riding lawn mower? I would plan to primer it first of course.

Also,..can it be rubbed out and waxed afterwards?

My brother and his friends always had chevelle's and novas & had to have the stripes on the hood. Cars were primed/preped, the stripes were sprayed with rattlecan laquer then masked to paint the rest of the car. Afterwards they were polished & waxed......

Were those stripes white in most cases? I think white might be the easiest color to spray paint? I am looking at painting this little thing in silver. Thanks Dave2

mostly black and chevy orange, but I remember red, silver, and a deep blue. maybe white, but I don't remember...

yes,one coat primer,3-4 coats(red) piant,one coat clear coat.

Delta Red,...did you wet sand in between the coats of red? Also, what brand paint did you use if you remember?

Thanks for the reply Dave2!

You can do a fairly good paint job with rattle can paint however it is not near as durable. Stay away from Valspar paint. It will fade to pink in two years. I don't know if you can get the color you need but I've had pretty good luck with Dupli Color paint.

I painted a 4000 ord with spray cans a few years ago.I started out to touch it up and ended up doing the whole tractor. It can out great, most people thought it was a professional job.It took 10 cans though and they were a lot cheaper then.Probably cheaper to buy a quart and spray it now.

I have been thinking about just buying one of those 80.00 paint sprayers from some place like Home Depot? I have seen some sites here on the net that says one can do so using Rustoleum, and thinning it out with acetone.

Yes, you can spray bomb anything. Here's my 16hp Gilson. We were practicing before putting flames on my model A. After we were done, we decided against trying the flames on my A. A lot of neighbors got a kick out of the lawn mower. Just something to do on a Friday night.

Rustoleum has some appliance spray paint in a few colors that is smoother and with more gloss than their other paint.

I paintd my 46 2N with rattle cans from ACE 2 yrs ago. I didn't want (or expect) a show look. Just better than it was. It came out OK, just not too shiny. Picture is from last years JULY 4TH parade. I keep it in my shop.Use it alot.

Sure you can get decent results with a rattle can. It's all in the technique. You need to operate the rattle can like you operate a spray gun.

Most people just hold the nozzle down and wave the can back and forth on whatever they want to paint. Instead, make long straight strokes down the length of the item you're painting, starting the paint flow slightly before and ending the paint flow slightly past the item. Overlap your previous pass to prevent "tiger striping." Do 3-4 light coats with about 15 minutes between coats and make the last coat just heavy enough to smooth out. Also avoid wind.

I am planning to do this in my make-shift paint booth in the barn! Thanks mkirsch!

Richard from SE AZ,...your tractor looks great in pictures regardless.
