Speaking of 8Ns

Didn't want to hijack the post below, but what's the best way to get to the front distrubutor on an 8N? Pull the radiator? The one I had was a side mount, but Dads was a front mount. When he passed away,my brother took it up to his place and put it inside. He had it running last fall, but we tried to start it this spring and don't have any spark. My eyesight ain't that great these days anyway, but I fooled with that thing for an hour Sunday just trying to get some fine sand paper between the points to try to clean them up. And this was after my brother and nephew had fooled with it a few days before. I'm thinking as long as it's been since Dad did anything with it,it's gonna need a complete tune up.

Remove the coil and dist cap - just push them up and out of the way. Then remove two bolts and pull the dist right out of the tractor. Do the points on your workbench under the light.
The tang on the front of the cam that drives the dist is offset so it only goes back on one way.
Cept for having to get on your knees and reach around a bit to get in there it's EZ.

You do not have to remove the hood from a front mount 8N to get the distributer off. It's kinda a tight fit but it will come off. Take the coil off first, it's just held on with a bail, then it's smaller and will come out.

(quoted from post at 09:36:08 04/18/12) OK,so it's not gonna be something that's gonna be a bear to retime then?
You time it when you set the points....there is a procedure (and even a jig if you want to spend the money). Post over on the 8n Forum and someone will post a link for the procedure. I made my own setup using a bolt and washer and used a straightedge.

Nope fixed timing (advance is built into the dizzy, dizzy will not turn to adjust timing). The IO manual will tell you what to check and how to set it. Or go over to the YT Forn N page and ask there.
