Grinder Mixer vs hay

Hey guys, I have an old IH grinder mixer I use to make sheep feed with. I am using the 1" screen at low RPM for the corn, I don't want it ground, just cracked and so far it works good. I remember dad feeding slabs of hay into his Artsway as a child so I thought I would try it with mine. I have been laying one slab on the "throat" and pushing it into the hammers with another. It works the grinder pretty hard but the tractor doesn't seem to labor and the hay is chewed up in a nano second. Just wondering if this is the proper method for my grinder.

On another note I have a drive over Stan Hoist wagon elevator I tried to give to the guys in Mt. Pleasant but they weren't interested, I don't blame them. If anybody wants one private collection it will cost you $$. If someone has a club like the one in Mt Pleasant you can have it. I am located in central Iowa and don't deliver.

Thanks for any input.
Nate

That's the way I do it with my John Deere 400. It makes a pretty loud noise when it goes in, but I have done many loads of feed and it doesn't seem to have hurt anything.

I had a 700 that had a hay grinder attachment. It had a single chain elevator on the side under the auger that fed in to the mill. There was a large opening that you opened up with a lever so you could feed the whole bale in slowly.

Ground many-a-tub like that........with a NH (355???) way-back-when. For just cracking corn, we always removed the screen and ran it without one.

Ive been doing that for years! Once we had a small field of Alfalfa hay get 2 inches of rain on it just as we started to bale.Well you know the rest of the story, the hay wasnt very good by the time we got it baled. I ground every bit of that hay with ear corn and feed it to the steers. Must have been ok because the ate all of it! No waste! We grind alfalfa hay into all the cattle feed and goat geed. Grass hay doesnt work as good.Harder to grind. I use a IH 1250 grinder.. Doug

Nate, is this a wagon lift you have? If so, I might be interested. We have a harvest show in Ottumwa, IA and this item would be used there. Mike

I like to cut the slabs with a hay knife or tear them in half to feed them in. Makes a lot less racket that way.
