Mower gear box seal

The gear box on my wood's mower doesn't have a vent hole. During operation I am sure pressure builds up from the heat generated during operation. I noticed a little oil is pushed out of the seal area, just enough to keep the seal wet, no drips. Now I was thinking will that be better for the seal to push a little oil out to keep it clean? Or should I put in a vent hole, the factory didn't install. Stan
