Fighting the Great Corn Borer Wars

Interesting: The Great Corn Borer wars were also fought in the late 1920's in Northwest Ohio. In one of the "Two Clinder" magazines there was a story about special model D tractors used in Ohio and my dad told stories of how in the fall for two years in a row they wanted all the corn stalked plowed in the fall. He said it was very dry one fall and it was no problem doing custom plowing with a tractor as most farmers still had horses. He said he did a lot of custom plowing with a 2 bottom plow and his 12-20 Oil Pull.

Guess I learned something today. I plant corn on corn year after year due to my small operation. I almost always plow the ground in the fall. I didn't realize I was fighting off corn bore by doing so. I tried doing it without plowing a few years though but went back to plowing which seem to work out better for me. I have been planting the BT seed the last few years also. Maybe I'm wasting my money in doing so. It was interesting reading.

The researchers say as long as your neighbors are using BT corn, we can plant regular & still reap the benefits. Hum.

We are also seeing some viruses in corn - Goss' Wilt - because of little or no tillage.

Solve some problems - erosion and fuel use - with notill or multch tillage, and create new ones - more pests.
