Heading to Virginia in June for a friend's wedding and to see family. Driving down to see some things along the way.
I'll be taking I74 to Indianapolis, then I65 south to Louisville, KY then I64 east to Lexington, KY then I75 south and a state road over to Hiltons, VA.
From there I'll be making my way to Norfolk, VA to see family and some things in the area and possibly go deep sea fishing. My return trip will have me on I64 from Norfolk back to Louisville, from there I'll trace my steps back to Des Moines, IA.

Looking for some ideas of things I should try to see on my trip. Anything agricultural and historical would be great to visit. Thanks!

Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, the whole town of Berea Ky is loaded with crafts people doing what they do,Renfro Valley (thinking about going down to the Barn Dance myself this summer),Cumberland Falls. They call it the Niagara of the south.
On the way back,if you come through Beckley WVa,Theater West Virginia at Grandview. They put on live plays at an outdoor amphitheater on the edge of New River Gorge.

Better check the schedule on Theater WV. They have been in severe financial trouble and were close to shutting down. I live 40 miles from Grandview.

Rich you will be about 30 miles from Ft Knox and the Patton Museum if you don't mind going out of your way a little.

I'll be darned. They usually send me a schedule, but come to think of it,they haven't yet this year.

Rich Iowa,

If you are planning to go to Norfolk, you should check out the Tractor & Truck Museum off of I95 in Colonial Heights Virginia, approx 30 min south of Richmond. (Tractor Related). You will enjoy your stop, he has an old warehouse full of restored tractors and Trucks. If you are not interested in that Richmond and Williamburg are all very nice for the History Buff. Hope this helps.

Don't know if you're interested in a train ride through the mountains or not,but we took this ride a few years ago. Quite a site for a flatlander. You couldn't have blown the smile off my face with a sandblaster. Not very expensive for such a beautiful ride!

If you have an interest in ww2 an excellent place to visit is the Fighter Factory at the Suffolk municipal airport in Suffolk. There is one of the best aircraft restoration shops in the world that you can actually go into. With over 50 planes it is extremely impressive and the staff are great.

There"s some great bus tours of the naval base...and a fun trip but amphibious vehicle ("duck") along the coast of Va Bch.

If you go to Suffolk while you're close by you can head north a little and cross the river(take the ferry) to Jamestown. Driving up through that area are some nice old plantations.Use to be a lot of peanut farms and soybeans too. Jamestown is where it all began. I always like to visit the settlement where the dig is always in progress.

Here's a link for the ride across the river. The cost is free. Once at Jamestown you're close to Williamsburg if you like history. Lots of war history and again where this country began.

In sight of I64 in Charlottesville is T.Jefferson's home Monticello also Ash Lawn and Walton's MT (John Boy TV fame) is just South of Charlottesville.Unfortunately the Dew Drop Inn in Scottsville closed up a few years ago and they sold the sign on ebay.Lots of Winery's in Albemarle Co around Charlottesville.

If you drop down to I64 just a little west on 41. Lincoln's boy-hood home just south of I 64 in In. pigeon forge. Then just 10 miles East is Santa Claus In. Home to Holiday World. The nicest cleanest theme/water park in the country. Nice campground and plenty of rooms nearby. On East on 64 is Squire Boone's cave.

A shorter and less traffic way, would be I 74 all the way to cincinnati.Take i 75 to I 471 s to 27 s to AA (rt 9) to I 64.GOes past carter caves. Also more scenic, less traffic on AA, than interstates.Only drawback to this is construction on I 471. Don't come thru cincy after 3 pm, and you will be ok. Also could stop at maysville and see old washington, an early settlement in Ky, with many origional log cabins on site. The visitor cener is a cabin and was occupied til 1950's. Also could drop down to augusta,ky off AA down 19, tour the town, and cross the ferry to ohio. THen go down 52 to portsmth and cross back into ky, and continue to I64.52 is very scenic and lightly traveled. Can you tell i prefer not to drive on the interstates?
