They will out smart you with any plan you have. The only thing that works is to live trap, immobilize and release to the garbage can or just shoot them.

Might be smart to find out if they are protected before taking any notice of those who would kill everything.
Trap and relocate.
Over here [my State...Oz]it is illegal to remove them more than 200 metres from where they were caught. .

We have an elderly lady here that collects hair from the local barber every spring to spread out in her garden bed. She says the smell of “human” will keep them out. Seems to work. They got in an uprotected area and cleaned out half a dozen pepper plants. She spread out a batch of hair and replanted. No problems.

Personally, I keep a feeder close by so they have no reason to go in the garden.

I use a Parmak Solar 12 fencer with wire spaced off the ground to accommodate all sizes of critters. They touch their nose to the wire one time and no more.

Sometimes I tram them and haul them to the woods (where they belong) and release. Gets rid of them for a year or two.
A good dog can help too. But after a couple of years my dog my dog kind of gave up on catching them. He worked all summer and only caught one or two.

Wish I knew. We have a lot of squirrels here and they seem to like to hide up under my pickups and motorhome. Not really a problem until the dog knows they're there, goes crazy trying to get them and rips the wiring, etc out from underneath the vehicles.
When I try to start something and nothing happens, I know what happened.

They are tenacious little critters and will figure out a way around just about anything you try. I use an electric fence and a dog and that works. Make sure your fencer is the one that throws blue sparks and not a little unit. The old weedburners are perfect.

Worked with a guy who lived near a creek where there were lots of pecan trees. Planted his garden down there. He'd just work 'em over with his 22.

When I moved out here I had a rabbit problem and put a hot wire around my garden. I dug a shallow trench where the wire was placed to keep grass from growing up to it and put it low enough I thought to contact a rabbit; I thought.

One day I saw a rabbit, flat as a pancake, ears glued to his back, sneaking under the wire. Ha! Next time I just planted enough for everybody.
