JD 3020 Powershift Transmission Problem

JD 3020 with Powershift Transmission. Shifts into the reverse gears with no difficulty. When putting it in the forward gears it acts like it is bound up. It acts like it wants to go but jammed up. I move the 3-point lift and move the shifter around and eventually get it to go. When it is acting like this, I attempted to move the Tow lever into the Tow position and it grinds and is very difficult to put into the Tow position. Like I said, it is only the forward gears and it acts like it wants to go but is bound up. Any suggestions?

When was the last time the screen was cleaned and the filter/trans oil replaced? What kind of oil has been dumped into the transmission?
A service manual and a set of transmission test pressure gauges will be required. TimS,TxJim, JDdriver, WJD ad a couple of others are pro's on this topic.

Pull the cowling off and check the pin in the shifter handle, where it hooks to the linkage. if pin has worked out a bit to the right, it will cause the linkage to bind up.
Doubt that this may be your problem, because you also said the tow lever grinds. Have had several PS's and never had tow lever grind.
Good luck.

As b&d stated the only GOOD way to diagnose a Powershift is with a full set of gauges and a JD tech manual. I wonder if the park cable mechanism is stuck or park cable frozen and trans isn't coming all the way out of "park". IIRC On the tow lever it should only be shifted with engine not running or trans in park.

Tx Jim,

Got to work on it last night. You're right! The park cable is sticking and it is not coming all the way out of park. When it sticks, I can push the lever it connects to down and it releases. Is there supposed to be a spring or anything that helps it back down? there is a hole at the end of the lever that connects to thr rod that looks like there should be a spring there, but there is nothing there. Is there some way to lube it to make it slide easier? Thanks a bunch for your help.

Yes there is a spring(parts key #18
