I'm going to get my dad a stihl MS 250 saw for fathers day. Dad had both of his shoulders fixed last summer, and i was considering getting the easy start version to help with his shoulders, but to get the easy start you also get the tool less chain tensioner, and I've never seen anyone have any luck with them, granted these were not stihl saws but it still makes me leary. So do any of you guys have any experience with a stihl with these features, namely the chain adjuster, and easy start? I have a 460 magnum and love it but its a regular compression release, manual adjust bar. Thanks in advance.

dont hesitate, get him the easy start stihl saw and you will be his favourite son forever. I bought one when they were introduced a few years ago and loved it. My father happened to be giving me a had cutting wood and was using it, next thing I know he bought one for himself and loves it. Dont worry about the wrenchless chain adjuster. We have never had a problem with them, and in seconds you can have the chain snugged up again. Good luck

I think you should bring that saw over my house and let me try it out after you buy it.....Just so that you will be sure that it is a good gift for your dad.
1 month would be a good trial period.

I have two Stihls, an MS 210 with the tool-less adjust, and an MS 280 with the regular adjust. Sooner or later I will find the parts and they will both be tool-less adjust.

Got a small Stihl with the easy start for my Dad a couple of Christmases ago, he's in his late 60's. He didn't 'need' it until this year, but now he loves it! Really likes the easy start. He says the tensioner's "real easy", too.

Used to have a big old heavy Farm Boss 029, but I got the smallest 180 for pruning blueberries. I have a 16" bar on it, and it cuts anything and everything I need. Big, snmall handles it all. Have the quick-tighten feature, and it really works good once you figure out how it works. (Trick; you loosen it just a bit, but not too much, then adjust it, then re-tighten it.)

Go for it!!!

I have an MS250 with the Easy Start and I love it. I've used both, and the flip side is, I wouldn't have a 250 without the Easy Start. If your dad has/had shoulder problems, no way I'd give him a standard 250 without Easy Start. The extra 40 bucks is a no brainer. I tore the leg of my jeans and cut my leg a couple of times starting the standard 250.

The dealer I bought the saw with Easy Start from said he sells a lot of them to women, and also had sold one to an uncle of his who kept throwing his back out starting a regular saw.

For what it's worth, there has been a lot of discussion on this forum about gasoline for chain saws and small engines. I bought a new Stihl MS170 a coupla weeks ago, and the book says use gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89 and no more than 10% ethanol. Can't say for elsewhere, but hereabouts 10% ethanol is rated at 89 octane so that's what I've been using and it runs great. Regular unleaded without ethanol is rated at 87 octane.

my MS180 with tool-less tensioner works great and I use that saw ALOT. way more than I should and on bigger stuff than it was designed for. Give it a sharp chain and get to work. also have a ms290

I've got a MS270 with the tool less adjustment, love it. You hear a lot of complaints about the tool less setup, but I regularly (after every use) remove the cover and blow out the dust, keeps it clean and working well. Those that seem to have issues aren't that diligent about cleaning.

The only problem I had with Stihl was their stupid locking gas caps on the 260.

I've never had a problem with the tensioner on the 180.

Bought my dad a ms180 with the w/ tooless chain tensioner last year for fathers day. No problems yet. He seems to really like the saw.

I can't speak of the easy start and chain tensioner, but dad has the O25 and has had it for years. Its been a great saw. It does take a good yank to start it though.
