3000 starter

Did pull started off 1976 3000 diesel. Tried to test with battery cables hooked to truck. First time the solenoid did kick in but starter only turned slowly. Never did get up to speed needed to crank tractor.
Next time tired, solenoid would not kick the bendix out. Tried several more times,solenoid never did kick starter. Just shoed some smoke.
Think solenoid bad or maybe both?

Hard to do a real test that way. Take it to an auto part house and have them check it. Cost to you is your time and gas to take it there. They have equipment that will tell them the amp draw etc. which you can not do that way your trying. Now woth out being there and seeing what you did my guess is you did it wrong or it is bad but hard to tell by cyber space
