ampmeter installation

You hook plus + side of ammeter to battery side (wire coming from starter) and neg - side is where the alternator wire goes to and the accessories feed off that side also. Unhook ground wire at battery, (neg) while working. When you get gauge wired, hook up batt cable, turn on lights and if it is hooked right it will show discharge.

The SUPPY side of an ammeter (+ on a - ground tractor) has but ONE wire, it attaches to the main hot ungrounded battery voltage source, often via a wire down to where the big battery cable atatches to a starter solenoid/switch.

The other LOAD side (- on a - ground) feeds hot battery voltage to loads like lights and ignition (often to the BAT input terminal on light switch etc) PLUS wires to the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator (or an alternators main output) .......If a tractor uses a 4 terminal VR having the extra 4th LOAD terminal loads are fed from it instead of the Load side of the ammeter as if on a 3 wire (NO load terminal ) VR

Got it????????

(quoted from post at 17:32:08 07/16/12) IH 560 with alternator, How do I wire up the ampmeter? thanks ,all help appreciated
ucky, be sure and leave the wires connecting to ammeter long enough that you can easily reverse them, because it will read backwards & you will need to reverse them to get it to read + charging & - discharging. you will end up with battery + connected to ammeter neg if your machine has a battery neg ground system.
