jd 6620 header slowly dropping and hydr hot with corn head

Read the valve under cab is probably worn. Can it be changed without removing the whole valve box? Would the valve letting the header drop cause hydraulics to get hot even though its gravity?

Sounds as if the control valve spool or housing is worn allowing oil to bypass or seal is leaking in one or both lift cylinders. If this is the problem the valve housing & spool must be replaced as a unit or seal kits in cylinders.

Noticed on concrete today the header is tilted just a little but no external cylinder leaks. I will put seals in both of them since they"re simple to work on. Could that possibly cause heat somehow?

Aren't the cylinders single acting? If they leaked it would be to the outside and be visible. Also, they are plumbed together aren't they? How can one side be lower than the other due to hydraulics problem.

Header slowly dropping is probably due to a cracked or failed poppet. They are replaceable. See parts breakdown.

How hot is hydraulics. Normal can be 100 degrees above ambient. Need to measure. Hot to the touch means nothing as 110 is hot.

Yes they are single acting. No oil leaks and they are plumbed together, Don"t understand how its doing it myself.Pins are tight and nothing broke. Don"t have temp gun but the hydraulics are definitely over 110. Can"t hold your hand on tank. Doesn"t get hot with grain head with oil goin through the reel. With corn head it takes couple hours for heat light to come on then let it idle for 15mins and you can run an hour before it comes back on. Now that I read this myself (LOL) it doesn"t get hot unless the back pump is engaged.

Was expecting the header drop was due to poppet valve. Can they be put in without removing the whole vavle box?

I would think you can replace poppets easily.. Better see TM for procedure to be safe.

If back pump does not have to be engaged, don't.

My 6600 does not have hydraulic heat sensor..

As side to side levelness of header. Are front tires inflated the same, same size, same brand? Is front axle level to header??

Yes everything is the same. Feeder house has a tilt to it. About an inch difference from side to side on feeder house. With 20' header its at least 6 inches from end to end. Raise the feeder house you can even see twist.

When using corn head, you have to join the two lines for hydraulic reel together. If not, that can cause the overheating.... They are under the cab front above the feeder house.

Sounds like your feeder house is sprung. Are the lift cylinders the same diameter? Maybe someone has changed and put on another of different size.

Yes got the hoses hooked together and cylinders are the same. Took quick look again today while working on other things and I"m not sure but it looked like where the cylinder pins hooked to feeder house might be adjustable.Won"t I feel like a dummy if they are. As far as heating, I think I"ll rebuild the valve box then look for hotspots where its bypassing somewhere.

Cylinder mountings should not make any difference as they would balance out anyway.

The hydraulic system is an open center system, and it bypasses all the time, or should!

Make sure the two hoses are securely joined together under the cab floor. See the operators manual for the dial setting for reel speed when the grain platform is NOT used.

Does the rear pump (?) run reel drive. If it can be disengaged do so, if the Operators manual says to.
