After having 3 dry summers in a row, my lawn, mostly weeds, is cooked with the exception of small circles of grass, which is still green and going to seed.

What kind of grass is this? I want to buy this grass seed and replant my yard perhaps this fall or in the spring. Plan not to cut lawn until this grass produces seeds.

lets see,if i can identify it,forgeting the few right along bottom and starting at left.1st clump, sandbur, look at the purple on the bottom of stems. right in center, maybe a gamma grass, and to the left the same. along the top on the right beggars lice maybe ,or possibly what we call here goathead. a little bermuda mixed in it appears to me.looks pretty much like my yard!

I was referring to the two round green spots that are going to seed, so you think this is gamma grass? Never heard of it. Where can I buy seed?

I consider the rest of it to be weeds which is what most of my yard consists of. Some of the weeds are dead and brown.
Thanks
George

Have you thought about Kentucky 31 fescue grass? I's what they plant along interstates. Any type of soil, any type of drainage and requires very little water.

You can buy the seed online lots of different places, but its really not a turf or yard type grass. If i'am correct and that gamma it will always grow in clumps like that.it wont hardly ever fill in,and it spreads by dying back in the middle and pushing out from the center. it more of a native pasture grass. honestly ,even though this can survive a drought ( most native grasses can) its not a good yard grass. since it grows in clumps youll beat yourself and your lawnmower to death trying to mow it.theres lots of rescources on the net to help find a good yard grass for your area. but starting a yard in a drought may be tough.if your established stuff is dying back theres not much use trying to start new in my opinion. my yard as i say is about like yours.

Not sure it's gamma grass. Gamma grass needs lots of water and good soil. As you can see the soil has sand and rocks in it and this grass loves dry weather, that's why it has my interest. Also the seed stem for gamma grass has 3 branches. This has only one stem with seeds.

Yes, I planted some 2 years ago December 1, 2 days before the snow. I find that's the best time. However, with the lack of rain, it doesn't fair as well as the grass I posted a pic of.

As for killing my self on a lawn mower, that's not an issue. I use a farmall C and a 6 ft woods belly mower. There isn't a smoother riding mower on the market. The only problem I have mowing with a tractor is my face hurts from smiling. Never really liked mowing before using a farm tractor.

Not sure where you are located, but to me, the grass clumps in the foreground look like ryegrass, which is a common yard grass.

BINGO IHRED! YOU WIN A PRIZE. I went to wikipedia perannal rye grass and that's the animal. Just one stem for the seed. Going to get some seed and do a winter planting.

I live in W. Centeral Indiana.

It looks like buffalo grass to me. Either way, I don't think it's going to choke out the bermuda, spurge, crabgrass, sedge and dandelion I see in the pic.

Maybe you out to try a rock garden?

so thats perennial rye grass, dont guess ive got that.though i think ive got every other weed known to mankind.I'll have to check that out too.ive put in annual rye grass with limited success maybe i can use that also.

Jackinok is right; reddish-purple tint is sure sign of sandbur. I pull all I can find before it goes to seed. Keeps burs out of the beagle's feet.
