A different twist on Mother Deere's parts pr...

Since everyone was beatin" up on "Mother Deere" and Seller last week, (me too, but I was gentle, and only a wee bit!) I decided that some credit was due: Replacing the front bearings and seals on the "48 A roll-o-matic, I bought the after market kits: both inner and outter bearings and the two felt seals (enough money even after market at $86.00 per side, but better than Deere!) but I was unable to get the tin retainers out with out destroying them (1st time they"d been out since they were put in in "48 it appears) and neither they nor the hub gaskets were available after market. I clenched my, jaw, sat down and called Deere...SURPRISE!!!!!!! Only $11.00 per for the retainers and $7.00 for the 2 gaskets! VERY REASONABLE in MHO! AND guess what? I know that they will 100% fit! AND, they were in stock! YeeHaw BTW they have oil filters in stock for that tractor too, unlike NonTractor Supply!

I can find no rhyme nor reason to it at CNH. A pin that holds up one end of the header of my discbine and is no more than a hitch pin was $86.00 but a fuel pump for my 9000 was only $33.00. How can you figure that?

I work parts at a CNH dealer and I"ve never been able to figure out how they price stuff either. Guess you have to smoke the same stuff they do to figure them out.

Lets see what you really saved with your after market kit.

2- D636R Felts $8.29ea $16.58
1- JD7224 Inner Cone 31.91
1- JD7270 Inner Cup 16.75
1- JD7266 Outer Cup 7.75
1- JD7216 Outer cone 30.64

Total $103.63

So your after market kit was $17.63 cheaper. I may have used it if the bearing where a quality brand. Still JD was not too bad on this repair either. Just try this on some of the same age tractors of other brands and you will find that JD is not as bad as some of them. Plus you where able to get the retainer at a reasonable cost in stock.

Seller! You is preaching to the choir...pretty much...I have always advocated for OEM parts...like i said before...walk into a CNH dealer and order head studs for a Super C or Super H! It"ll take a visit to the proctologist to get ya normal again! But my azzzzzz is still lil chapped over that head gasket! And the bearings are good...anything i don"t buy from Momma Deere comes from the same guy...all quality stuff!

Not to put water on your flames, but you can still find a few reasonably priced NOS parts there. It is simply a function of they missed them somehow.
Here is a line that is generally spoken in their shops.
You ask why the price is so high on NOS parts, and there are two answers.
One, "THEY ARE VERY RARE AND LOW USAGE THEREFORE IT COST MORE TO WAREHOUSE THEM."

Or, "WE SELL SO MANY OF THESE IT COST MORE TO KEEP THEM STOCKED."
Anytime there is more than one answer to the same question, you can bet at least one answer is a lie.

The real real truth is this. They basically ignored antique tractor owners and NOS parts until someone saw that the aftermarket guys and NOS parts sellers were making some money due to the demand. They then decided to jump in it and ran the prices on many items sky high, etc.

I was in a CNH dealer for a part and I asked about the little rubber plugs that cover the brake adjustment holes on my Ford 641. The guy looked it up in the book and said that he hated to even tell me what they listed for.
Would you believe $28.00 for two. Said thanks but no thanks..went to NAPA and bought a bag of 4 off the HELP! display on the wall (generic parts such as knobs, door lock buttons etc.)for $2.00.
Pays to shop...

I work in the parts business @ a New Ford Store.

One thing about parts is one has to look at
every sale & purchase. There are MANY MANY MANY
Parts OEM is the Only way to go.. I found out
the Hard way one thing with John Deere Bearings
are not too far off the beat"en path & most of
the time better. On Saturday I picked up a Belt
for a 51 Mower & J/D"s Retail was 39.62,
aftermarket @ a garage"s discount 47.85.. All
I"m say"en is Use your head & Price everything.

Belt for my Case 800 was $17 at Caseih dealer and $23 at Napa. Woods mower part was $15 at same dealer and $12 online but add $6 shipping...

It also pays to shop around.

Local parts store is always the lowest $$ but some stuff is questionable quality. Ordered a "premium" front wheel bearing from them for daughters car. About $25+ less then NAPA "regular series". To my surprise it was in a Timken box with Made in USA on it.

Napa silver (or what ever they're calling them now) filters are less $ than a plain fram at wallyworld (had the mis fortune of going in there the other day... remembered why we quit going there).

i wouldnt mind paying extra for good parts, but around here if i walk in the dealer i see the same parts and brands i find at the local hobby farmer store or online at a higher price.I look at the part and it has the exact writing and part number in a different box that i'm throwing away anyhow. Again, if those parts were truly oem quality that worked for years, i would have no problem at all with them, but thats not always the case. after lots of years working on this stuff i do know the value of good parts, theres simply a false economy in buying parts that last a third or less as long, but the color of the box is meaningless. the sad fact is that if the chinese were to stop supplying parts, most of this stuff would be unrepairable in a surprisingly short amount of time. A good example is tillage equipment parts. heard a well known manufacturer of farm equipment say just the other day on tv that he buys every part he can made in the US.even though this equipment is considered to be some of the best,he cannot buy ground engaging parts in the US anywhere.its all chinese/japanese made.simply because no one here makes it.his equipment is twice the price of one made overseas, but it out of neccesity uses the exact wear parts as the half priced brands.to a person who never would wear out even a cheaply made piece of equipment in his lifetime where is the economy in buying a frame made in the us?when the points, bottom parts wear out the same as the high priced ones, where is the incentive? i personaly simply believe that if your going to sell these parts for more the quality should be there also.i also understand that dealers have more overhead and costs than the on line folks also.I try to buy US made stuff, but i refuse to pay extra for a us made box.

But----after what you said, the bottom line generall is:

"If it's green and yellow,
Screw the fellow!"

Ain't that right, bucko and dear?

hydraulic filter for a jD 482C forklift at napa
140 bucks,at deere 49 dollars.

My friend needed a bearing. 45mm self aligning w/ locking collar. NH dealer gave him a Peer brand bearing and holder as a unit. They said it was the only way it was available. $127. My brother sells Peer branded stuff once in a while. I called him for a price. $8.75 for the holder and the bearing was $19.64. For the exact piece the NH dealer handed him. Originally the bearing was a Fafnir. Bearing only from Fafnir $65.24

every once in a while you will luck up,i had a lucas starter that never really worked good,so when it finally went out i asked the re-builder if a delco would fit the tractor, he said it would but it had to have a spacer and he could not get one, tried several places no luck, so i went to the dealer ready to pay through the nose, asked if he had one no but could order one,at this point i was going to change it to a delco if the spacer did cost $50.00 when he quoted a price of $7.00 shipping and all i didn't give them time to change there mind, coarse they made up for it on the next purchase
