Sad day yesterday

It was truly a sad day yesterday. A scrapper/crusher came in the yard yesterday looking for the neighbors place. He says, "I see you have a lot of junk around." Brother couldn't wait to show him what he could buy to crush. We have some old demolation derby cars, which were fine to let go, but he starts pointing at many good pieces of junk, that are worth more as collector things, than scrap. Will be interesting to see what gets scrapped instead of saved. Brother is kinda the boss, or at least he says he is. Hope the guy doesn't come back, but I'm sure he will. And I don't get much say in what happens. We are always going to the junk line to get an alternator or a tire, I don't know why he wants to get rid of everything! And it's not like they are paying thousands of dollars.

Was putting up hay on this guys place. He was a junkman and had about 40 acres of stuff scattered everywhere. A guy come in and ask if he could have all the old tires and the junkman said yes. Well he had a look like new, New Holland pull behind tractor scyclebar mower. The next time I was there it was turned over on its top and the tires and wheels missing. Years later he died and his son who lived 80 miles away hired a crushing outfit to come in and clean it all up. There went the mower and I know a new three section JD harrow that I would liked to have, all gone.

Some people are that way. When I was in Tennessee The new plant manager decided to "clean up the place" and scrapped a section of 14" left handed screw conveyor, after all it's just a partial section and he was only saving full sections. About two weeks later we trashed the feed screw on #2 cooker and needed about 4' of 14" left hand screw. Wasn't any available in three states, called our fab shop, they informed us we should have about 8' in stock from the 12" they sent when the cooker was put in. It was an interesting 2 days before we got the line running well and we pretty much lost the weekend. But hey the scrapman probably gave us $2.00 or $3.00 for the screw, although he wasn't that shrewd he could of sold it back to us for $500 two weeks later.

I RUN ALL THE JUNK GUYS OFF THE FARM.WE DO OUR OWN SCRAPPING .JUST WISHED I HAD DONE IT WITH THE LOGGER THAT STOPPED WHEN DAD WAS ALIVE,BUT HE STILL OWNED THE FARM THEN.THEY TRASHED THE WOODS.A REAL BAD DEAL.

I've had this sign hanging on the side of my barn for years now. A couple of punks pulled in one day in a pick up and got out and were looking around. I walked down behind their truck and while I was writing their license plate number in my pocket note book one of the asked me if anything was for sale, I pointed at that sign 10' from their face and said no. Told them if they learned to read they might be able to find an honest job The punk that was driving asked me what I was doing and I told him getting your plate number so if anything comes up missing I can tell the police who I saw taking it. Haven't seen those boys in the area since. Must be the truck wasn't stolen.

No, I don't think I will break up the family farm because he wants to scrap a mid 50's IH 4-wheel drive pickup, and I don't. I know to some, family isn't important, but it is to me.

i cant stand scrappers darn bit. just stupid non sence what people throw away. i scrap but i dont scrap anything. just broken useless parts and misc peices of left over projects just junk. i get scrapers probly 4-6 a yr wanting to buy the huge scrap piles i got. i end up leaving the scrap yard with stuff. lawn mowers and stuff i can find uses for. and i do believe all scrap yards should have salvage section for cars and trucks and things like that to give things a second chance. in case your wondering yes i do take this pretty seriosly and what ever you do dont let him scrap that truck.

Family is definitely important.
There's a lot of respect in that.
Both ways.
I would have a heart to heart and make sure he knows how you feel.
As for the IH, make sure you have the axle number. LOL

I know what you mean..In 2007 I sold the family farm in NE. Had rows and rows of equipment. Hauled out as much as I could, but didn't have time to have people come and take what they wanted. Most went to an iron dealer. 100 ton. There were 8 old combines, etec etec. I did get all the tractors out. But wished I would have got at least one of the grain drills.

Had one of those guys stop by a couple of years ago. I told him "OK I'll pick it, and I'll go with you while we weigh it" Never heard from him again.

You know? I don't care much for strangers coming down to the barns. Its one thing when someone comes knocking at the house door or pulls into the drive lost, but nearby the address that they are trying to get to. Thats one thing, and even these days I have become skeptical of even them. But when someone you don't know or never seen before comes down to the barns, thats different. You just should not have to holster a sidearm on your own property, and I typically don't in the barns or close to the house. But when I'm out on the property in one of the fields, I carry, mostly for the four legged kind of varments. When you're out on a tractor and someone pulls up asking questions and they see a longarm stock sticking out of a pouch mounted to your tractor, they seem to not be so forward and tend to move on. Thats not why I carry, but these days there are some two legged varments roaming the countryside that have gotten the attitude that what someone else worked for they were somehow more deserving of and cheated out of, and I and my neighbors dont mind much if they dont hang around asking questions that they shouldnt be asking. I get a real uneasy feeling when someone I dont know and didnt invite comes down to the barns, especially if there is more than one of them.

Good luck.

Seems like you're the only one that feels that way in this case......... Family is so much more bearable when there's an ocean and a few states & countries in between ya.......
