ball valves vs. diesel fuel

Can I use a normal brass ball valve from the hard ware store with diesel fuel? It says on the tag its ok to use with propane and natural gas. Im wanting to put it on a fuel barrel.

I wouldn't see any reason why not. There are so many uses for so many products that they weren't designed for. Take street elbows and iron pipe fittings. They weren't designed for hydraulic systems, but most work very well and are one hail of a lot cheaper than normal hydraulic fittings, so why not?

Just be careful using the standard pipe fittings in hydraulic systems. Granted they are used alot on low pressure systems on farm equipment, but the fittings are still made out of a cast material and not from a solid, machined piece of steel. Because of that the fittings are easily broken if struck and wether your dealing with an 800 psi system, or a 2000 psi system, a broke fitting is going to spill alot of oil and be a hazard for anyone close to it when it gets broken.

Like I said, I see it all the time on farm equipment but no matter how many times I see cast fittings used like this, and know they will work, I still don't like it because I know what can happen with one blow to the fitting.

Go ahead and use iron pipe,(water pipe)fittings
for hydraulics..they are cheaper..and the money
you save can go towards a more expensive coffin !

Remember Dunham used them from the factory so they considered them satisfactory. I don't know the highest pressure hydrolick system in use for the tractors they made the loaders for but some were over 2,000# pressure.

With respect, Water pipe should not be used with hydraulics. Water pipe has no where near the required strength to handle real hydraulic pressure. It is sure fine to use it in gravity based fluid transfer, or other pressures in the 300psi or lower range. I realize you were addressing that with your answer, but many who read this could replumb a modern tractor with water pipe and have a serious life threatening accident. (just cautious, Jim)

should be no problem for a fuel barrel--the maximum pressure is very low--I have two brass ball valves from home depot on my 941b fuel tank and they don"t leak at all.

Remember too, there is a difference in schedule 80 fittings vs schedule 40 fittings, and a difference in pressure ratings between the smaller size pipes and the larger sized pipes. In other words a 1/4 sch 40 fitting might very well handle 2000 psi but a 3/4 sch 40 might only be rated at 500 psi, and it will take a sch 80, or better, in the 3/4 to hande the higher pressure. The same holds true in actual hydraulic fittings and line also. Where a 1/4 two wire hose might be good for 2500 psi, the same 2 wire hose in a 3/4 size isn't going to be rated as high and will commonly require a 4 wire hose for the same rating/burst pressure as the smaller hose.

Just remember I am talking in the most general terms here, and using round figures, with no actual basis other than using them as an example. In other words the sizes and pressures mean absolutely nothing beyond expressing the fact that using standard pipe fittings in any hydraulic system without knowing the pressures on the system, the pressure ratings of the fittings, the system temp, and any other pertinent information is nothing but an accident waiting to happen.

Standard black pipe fittings for natural gas are made from malleable iron and are made for 125 psi. The same fitting is made in extra heavy wall thickness are rated to 300 psi. You can pound on these fittings with a hammer and they will bend but won't break. The same fittings are also available in cast iron and used mainly for heating systems. A good smack with a hammer will crack them. These type of threaded and socket weld fittings are also made in forged steel and can handle pressures in the 3000 pound range. I would not use standard malleable fittings on a hydraulic pressure line
