Just wondering.

Are you using triple 2x6 treated below grade and laminating them to regular 2x6 above grade? Thats what the 2nd pic looks like. But in the 1st pic it looks like a solid 6x6 on the saw horse.

i Rick, its a solid 6x6 at the bottom, I had run it through the mill about three feet to get a nice square cut. There are many ways of doing this, I could of just bought 2x6 treated and laminated that way but this is the way I decided to do it :D

(quoted from post at 21:31:28 08/25/12) Looks great Lyle. You bolting those splices?
was thinking about bolting after I got them planted. I just finished nailing the pizz out of them..lol

(quoted from post at 17:42:03 08/25/12) I have always built with a total 6x6. [b:0cb8fadf61]What is the saving doing it this way[/b:0cb8fadf61]?
reated 6x6 x 20' is prob at least $75 a pole.
Splicing them like Lyle did is cheaper but me thinks not that much if one includes the sawing and nailing.
Plus the post is weaker at the joint, athough in a wall setting it wont matter.

If you could buzz the non-treated part on your own saw mill, maybe even
more of a savings?
PS, Lyle, looks like you're two short in that pile.......

I maybe woulda staggered the jouint a bit, as you did it there is basically 1 2x6 holding your wall together at your joint which is a weak spot.

But I think you know a lot more about wood and building than I do, so hope you don't lose any sleep over my input. :)

idnt take that long to nail them together with an air nailerand sawing up the lumber didnt take that long. I sawed up about 900 board feet in a few hours. I probably saved about a 1000 bucks by doing it the way I did. PS laminated wood is usually alot stronger then a solid timber.

know what you are saying Paul but in this application I wasnt worried about the splice

Doesn't really matter what everyone else thinks, if you like it that's all that counts. I personally would love to be able to do myself what you can do, I'm just not in the finanical position to do it. I think everything you post is great, I don't like to depend on anyone or anything to get done what I have to get done. Some may call it being cheap, but I consider it a challenge. Keep up the good work and the great post and pictures, I know I look for your name everytime I get on this fourm.
Jus to let you know some background on me, I bought an old farm homestead in Iowa about 8 years ago. 1 year into the renovations, I was out cutting down some over growth. I had a 50 foot elm comdown on top of me, lost my left leg, broke my back and then had a blood clot hit my heart and then 2 years after that, had a blood clot hit my small intestine and lost 90% os it. Had a doctors appt. the other day, surgeon said I'm a miricale, he does not know any one else that has survived with only 10% of there small intestine. I still work full time and have a second full time job, just trying to support my family. Things are really tight, do to the fact that I was off work for most of the last 5 years, but things are now looking up. Right now, I'm working on my barn, which I'm turing into a workshop for both woodworking and working on cars. Love to do everything I can on my own. Place was neglected for a long time and it's up to me to make this place into a home for me and my children, and I have 6 of them. So when some tells you that you can't do it or your not doing it the way it should be done, tell them to stick it. Do what you have to do to survive and tke care of you and yours, not all of us have the plush life of some of these members. Sorry if this has turned into a rant or ------ some of you off, but I personally get tired of people telling others that what they do is not the way that it should be done, by their own standards anyway. Lyle, like I said, keep up the good work and I'll always be looking for your next post.

A saw mill and a hot wrench? I want (need) more toys ~laughing~
Them posts look good to me and I try to over engineer everything (which drives the other-half wild ~snicker~)
