Gas tank with glass??

Found an old tank about the size of a starting fuel tank laying in the woods.
Its all rusted out, but on one end there is a 3 or 4" dia. glass inserted - I suppose to allow visual of contents.
I've never heard of or seen a tank like this.
Anybody know what equip. or tractor had a tank like this? There was no other parts or equip. around where this was found.
 
It sounds like the fuel tank from an early gasoline stove. Stamped metal frame, rather skeletal construction, 2 or 4 burners, with the fuel tank hanging off the end. Often used on wash day for heating extra water. There were some Kerosene stoves as well.
