Just put rebuilt altenator on new holland lx565 skidsteer. Checked voltage at battery at idle 14.8 half throttle 14.9 full throttle 15.2. These seem a little high to me. These reading were after it was ran about an hour doing chores. The reason I checked with multi meter is these were the reading the skidsteer computer were giving me while I was using it. Are these normal or a little high and will it hurt anything?

As few things come to mind. #1 is a digital meter it can read a tad bit off due to static. #2 most home meters are not calibrated so that to causes false reading by a tad bit. #3 a weak battery or an amp draw such as lights etc will cause a reading like you have. But for the most part 15 is a tad high but not so high as to worry unless you start smelling battery acid/sulfur like smells as in a over charge condition

Ron,

Did you happen to notice what your battery's voltage reading was when the ignition was turned off and the tractor was just sitting there?

As you know, a 12 volt battery is actually 12.6 volts. It might be an interesting check for the calibration of your meter before you make a determination of your alternator's output when the engine is running,

Just a thought.

Another thing you might do is check the voltmeter against a different alternator, say in a fairly new auto or truck. Cold alternator gives a bit more voltage than a warm one. Then at least you know if the voltmeter is reading OK or not

Alternators should be a steady 13.8 if not then the diodes are bad or wrong ones. Take it back and get one from some other place that rebuilds them correct.

13.8V is low for initial charge in cold weather. 13.8V is float voltage in hot weather.
Diodes the problem? Nope, it's either the voltage regulator or the circuit to the voltage regulator.

I had a 1972 Ford hardtop with the 429 engine. It had everything electrical and the charging voltage was 15.2 volts. Never had any battery problems once the battery was fully charged the charging amps dropped. Never blew any headlights or fuses. I had the shop manual for that car and it had the 15.2 volts listed as the charging voltage. I took my late MIL to SC several times for the Winter and we went back to get her in the Spring. The speed limit was 65mph back then and just about everyone was running 75. One of the best cars I ever owned and I bought it used in 1975 for $1600.00 inspected. Hal
