will it pull it?

I always heard the rule of thumb was 10 hp per shank.

I pulled an 11 shank with a 105 hp Farmall 856, and a 14 shank with a 140 hp 1086, so the rule of thumb would seem to be accurate.

I think you'd be OK. Might make 'er work a bit, but that's what they're for.

It'll pull it just might not be as fast as you want if its tough ground.I pull a 7 tooth chisel about 15" deep with a Long 910 (Zetor) about 85 HP in red clay but not too fast sometimes.

I think 5-shank should be about right for that tractor. I have an 7-shank that I pull with my 2950 (85 pto, 75 drawbar). Like others said, it's all about soil type and depth. In my clay fields I can't get in the ground very far before I'm spinning my wheels (and that's MFWD). In my sand field I could probably pull it with a pickup :)

Southern chisel plows are different than northern chisel plows, as well as soil types.

'Here' you want about 20-25 hp per chisel shank, if you want to get an inch or 2 deeper than the plow pan in the hard clay soil, it takes a bunch of hp to rip that up, but it's the whole point of being out there.

I just got a 7 shank 4 inch twisted chisel plow, going a10 inches deep, it was all my 145hp tractor wanted at times.

His tractor should do some work out there in the field with 75 hp on 5 shanks, I assume standard 2 inch shovels. There might be times he'll have to get a little shallower than he wantys, but mostly in lighter soil than I have, it should work out.

Not saying you are wrong, Goose, just that things can sure be different in different places. :)

Yeah, I know.

I chiseled some ground with the 1086 that had never been chiseled before. It was full throttle, 1st gear with the TA pulled back almost all the time.

Several years later after it had been chiseled a few times, I'd roll along in low 4th at 4.5 mph with the 856 and 11 shanks.

I have had places with the ripper on the 8760 that would spin the whole tractor out, but yet pull it at 5mph everywhere else at the same depth. Headlands and driveways especially, but you know when you hit them. Almost eat the wheel, I can't imagine a car accident...
