cylinder liners on lathes

I have very successfully done so with the thick liners. Buttttt. I have a great 16" swing lathe that holds 2 tenths. I would not do a thin sleeve < 1/8" thick. Be careful with chuck clamping pressure, the roundness suffers if too tight. Jim

Sounds like that would be a good application for a fixture that
could hold the sleeves by the flange with toe clamps.

Then chuck on the fixture.

Our local machine shop bored 4020 JD sleeves to 4.50 for me didn't go all the way left some to hone out, after they were installed. That was 9 yrs ago. I think those sleeves were 4.25 originally. I put them in a WC. Vic

I once needed a sleeve to fit a Red Diamond 406. I
did it with a fixture attached to the cross feed for
holding the sleeve, and a boring bar between
centers. That's when I found out that RD-361 sleeves
are really hard. Skipp's right, though. The block
really is the ultimate holding fixture. There's a
machine shop going out of business in Grafton if you
want one of those boring bars. He wanted $300 for
it.

Use a four jaw chuck and a three point center at he other end
use a good gage to center it. It's not easy and take a good
lathe and good knowledge of how to due do it. You will also
need a carbide bit to cut the hard material in the sleeve. It's
not for the beginner with a cheap home lathe and little to know
training as a machinest.

Sorry if I messed up some of he names I'm worried about my
wife I found her lying on the floor when I got out of bed this
morning she disoriented and very week. We spent all day in
the ER they found she had a infected bladder and that she
was dehydrated. They also told me has dementia which is not
good. They wanted me to put her in a home with full time care
but I just couldn't do that we have been together for over 44
years and it's hard to not have her at home beside. I know
someday it will happen but I'm going to do my best to keep at
home with me. She 87 and most likely won't live that long. I
want her to be happy with me not sad in some strange place
away from her farm.

I feel for the issue with your Sweetheart. Keep an eye on her and things will be fine. Sometimes the individual cant express their own distress, diagnosing without input takes watching for little changes. Best of luck, and your reason is strong.
