Does a sherman transmission lower the gear ratio so that my 8N would go slower in reverse. Would like the ability to have a snowblower for the rear but reverse is too fast.
 
Still won"t have live pto and the pto will also rotate slower. Can"t make a silk purse out of a sow"s ear.
Cheaper and better to find a later tractor with live pto, live hydraulics and a slower reverse.
 
Yes, the Sherman combinatioin underdrive gear will slow reverse speed but it also slows PTO speed proportionally, rendering no net improvement for snow blower work.

Beyond gearing, you will also find your 8N unsuitable for PTO driven snow blower duty due to the lack of live PTO and insufficient HP for all but ideal conditions.

Save yourself a bunch of money and headaches and buy a back blade and chains for the N. You can move lot of snow with a blade and it useful in summer.
 
Thats the problem with snow blowers reverse is too fast. Now if you had a small 4ft model it could work. The 8n is a fine tractor but not just for a snow blower.
 
Simple answer is yes, no or maybe. You ask why I answer this way well there is more then one type of Sherman sold that fits the N series tractors. Some lower the speed some increase the speed some do both and then there are others that do other things odd. But for what you want NO IT WILL NOT WORK. Why you ask. Simple while it can lower you reverse speed it will also lower the PTO speed so the blower will not run fast enough to do its job. None of the N series tractor will do what you want very well if at all
