moving propane tank question

Will the hooks on the end of a 500 gallon propane tank support the weight of a full tank?
I bought a 500 gallon propane tank at a farm estate auction, the auctioneer said it was empty, turns out it was full.

that

No. The weight of the Propane will be around 1800 pounds, plus the weight of the tank. When I worked for a Propane seller we would take straps and make a sling to lift the tank body. We never lifted a tank with any hook or eye that was welded to the tank unless the tank was brand new and being unloaded from a semi trailer.

I alwary wrap strap or chain also around tank. Bought it for empty and is full----------Don't you just hate ir when something like that happens!!!! Good buy

I would do like the other posts said,...use straps and a good loader to lift it. You may want to check your local laws or drive the back roads,..it is illegal to transport a full propane tank on a public road,(here in Michigan) since there is no safety valves or pressure relief valves on the tank. You being a private owner and not a Propane company transport vehicle may get a hefty fine if an accident happens.Just a thought.

My local gas company delivered mine about 1/2 full.
They strapped it instead of using the eyes.
They aren't allowed to deliver them full, (Michigan also) so they
brought it and then sent another truck to fill it.
Worst case scenario maybe your local gas company could
empty it, move it and then refill it.

I moved a 1000 gal tank with 3020 and 148 loader, had some gas in it. Would never lift from the hooks- used two chains around the tank.

Yes. I bought a 1000 gallon tank 80% full at a auction. Asked gas company to pump it out for me. Told me that was to much hassle that they would come over with the boom truck and pick the tank up. Picked it up by the handles set on there truck and set it off at the farm by the handles. Said they do it that way all the time.

Ray,

You might have a problem transporting that legally down any road especially for any distance without permits, markings, and proper equipment (trailer/truck). 100 pound tanks and smaller are one thing, but a full 500 gallon tank is a whole lot of explosive, and I have to think that propane dealers/haulers have all of the proper documentation and equipment. You don't want to drop that tank going down the road and...?

I think like most others, would be best to strap it to lift it. Tying it down? What does a liquid like that weigh? About 8 pounds per gallon? Plus the weight of the tank, another 1,200 pounds itself?

Good luck, be very careful, don't get yourself into trouble.

Gas company said they wouldn't move someone elses tank. Said they would only pump out there own tanks.

Had a 500 gallon propane tank that had a valve go bad. Propane company came out and pumped tank down to 10% ( thats what Indiana law requires) then had a special trailer that they backed over it and lifted with eyes on tank and after they lifted it they put large straps under it and straped it to trailer. Trailer was placarded on the new tank coming in and the old one going out. If it was mine I would have it moved by a propane company and let them take the liability if an thing should happen.

As usually answers vary. I'm sure on one of my tanks it has a tag right by those loops that says to only lift here when empty.
So I would do as those who say loop all the way around the tank. I would think if you had forks and went under neath you should be ok too.But then it will want to roll on you.

If you transport it , you need to have hazmat and tanker endorsements, and have it placarded, whether it is empty or full. Not worth the chance if you get stopped... huge fine, maybe worse.

This would not be a good time to test the strenth of the hooks. A full water tank is a different story, but not a full propane tank. That tank could turn into one heckuva big torch if it cracked at a hook and the fog caught fire. Jim

Here it is not the law you have to worry about it is the LP dealers. If they see you moving a tank they will turn you in. Just take good straps sit it on your trailer. Then cover it with a old tarp and drive home.

But then they will only fill their tanks as well so after it is moved they will not refill it. What I have been told by propain dealers here in Ohio, The only tank you are allowed to own is the underground tank.

Moved 3 empty tanks from mid colorado through 4 scales to montana Just took red spray paint and wrote JUNK on the sides. Filled in western montana.

Use a spreader bar or have enough chain to get an angle of 45*.

The hook points are designed to lift the tank full or empty when using correct lifting standards. A 500 gallon tank full (80%) should weigh about 2000 to 2100 lbs. Figure any tank as 4.25 lbs/gallon, times gallons plus tank tare weight (T.W.)

There's a lot more competetion to sell propane now.I live in ohio and see propane delivery trucks go by i never heard of.I have
1000 gallon at the farm i've owned for 30 years. The new renter wanted a different company than i use.I just had to sign a statement saying it was my tank and another company filled it.

Dot very far from you and think I was told it was state law. Father-in-law when he went to the country wanted to buy his, told he could not do it.
