I have a TC Contender that I had the 45LC /410 barrel it ten times the gun that you have if you shoot that thing you better be close to hospital because you going to need it.
Mine kicked like a mule with the 45 and twice as bad with the 410.
That round stock will roll around in your hand and brake your thump or fingers.
Walt

Test fired the derringer today very little re coil. smooth as silk. Holster works good for ccw as I had it on today when we went driving to Hayward .Both the PPK and derringer are so comfortable with shoulder holster, plus the fact their both readily accessible if needed. Thought it interesting to note very little recoil. Regards LOU.

Good to hear Walt! It looks like a good little consealed carry weapon. Nice to have that kind of firepower when you only have two rounds up the spout.
Which had more kick? The 45 or 410? I imagine it would matter a lot how heavy the bullet/ shot was.
Did you hit what you were aiming at? That short of a shotgun would be less than accurate I would expect.

I am glad you can hang on to that gun. I have fired many of those and I will STILL agree with Walt, I dont plan on shooting them any more.

With 3" .410 3 ooo buck the first one is chest second one stomach and third one groin at ten foot. If that doesn't work you have a second barrel.

D beatty sure would do the job. This derringer has only two barrels. but enough to truly discourage bad guys. LOU

You use to be able to get #4s .I don't know if you can still get them. Another round that could be used for personal protection is a .410 deer slug. As far as I know they come in 2 1/2" shells.

I was really leery about pulling the trigger ,so I did a two hand hold for the first round, noticed how little recoil it had with the 45 round (top barrel) shot gun(lower barrel) 410 shell.shot with ONE HAND HOLD.So far we,-son and I only fired 4 rounds through it. waiting for warmer weather to pattern it out between 5=7 ft. It is a close up working weapon and not a distance shooting gun. From what I can surmise, the derringer was meant to discourage car jackers, and I have no doubt it would be a great deterrent for that purpose. What do you think about a woman using one,I figure it would be good for personal protection, when out and about, depending on the age and stature of the woman?
As for me (77 yr old, with neuropathy) it works out just great.

GordoSD, thats what we are going to do, when the weather warms up. We will use the PDX 410 ammo with the 3 discs and 16 bbs to test it out. Will update with a photo of the target when done for personal views.
Thanks for the reply,
LOU

GordoSD, Haven't looked, but I think it's still available. We've opened up 12 guage shotgun shells with bird shot, emptied out the shot and replaced it with common BB's, resealed the shell. It does make for an interesting pattern.
We found some PDX 410 that we bought, has 3 discs and 16 BB's inside, so we will test it out for close distance.

You would have to have an extremely weak grip to be unsafe, and it still can be done with a two hand hold.I've yet to hear of anyone that was damaged by firing factory loads,by that I mean the shooter, not the receiver.lol. If the gun was that dangerous for the shooter, there would be warning labels all over the box and gun.The derringer is not to be placed in the category of the 480 Ruger or 500 magnum, to me its around the recoil of the 380- 9mm. A person must know his limitations, I know mine.lol
LOU

Chris(WA), it sure is a fun little gun. Both had the same felt recoil to me. Makes a good CCW.the 410 on this one is a really short range, but the milk jug full of water didn't stand a chance.Only about a 1/2" of barrel left for the 410 shell,so an extreme pattern is expected with #4 shot.

I talked to a guy 2 weeks ago, he had shot himself in the butt, damaged the sciatic nerve, now he has trouble with his ankle, the nerve is screwed up. He had it in a pair of jeans, picked up the jeans, the gun dropped out, he didn't know he was shot until he saw the blood. He surprised me, said it was a 9mm. I didn't know they made them in that round. He has taken a lot of flak, since he is a retired police officer.....

Nancy. was wondering how many rounds would be enough, what caliber weapon, all makes a difference. Some times just two rounds are more then enough if placed in a vital area .What caliber is acceptable for all women to fire with out damaging the hands? My wife carries her 9 mm 7 rounds and still in some instances would NOT be enough. What would you feel safe in using a weapon ,if need be? While a belt fed 12 gauge is out of the question, but say inside a vehicle, close quarters with very little room to swing a revolver or pistol.Outside of a vehicle there is alot more better "tools" to get the job done, I agree. The (2 shot) derringer is just one "tool" I carry while traveling,as it can be accessed quickly and reloaded in my case, less than 2 seconds.Either 45 lc or 410 shotgun ammo.
I realize in your neck of the woods, certain "types" of illegal varmints do come in packs, but around this part, for the most, it's usually only one or two at most.
I appreciate your point of view.

Spook, Didn't he know that guns come with a safety? lol. I'm sure he will remember from now on,as it was truly a pain in the azz.lol.
They make quite a few different calibers for derringers, if I'm not mistaken, I thought they made one in a 44 special/magnum a while back. Ours can be changed to several different calibers, all that is required is to change the barrel and ejector slide.I like the idea of the shotgun ammo as you don't have to be too accurate, just point and click.lol.
Thanks for the reply,
LOU

Walt, I think its because the longer the barrel, the more pressure builds, thus more recoil. The shorter the barrel not much pressure can be built up in it allowing a shorter burn and recoil. To me the derringer has less recoil than my PPK/S in a 380,or so it "felt" to me.It could also be different shape of hands and grip positioning when firing.I used both - two hand grip, first shot -- one hand grip on the last shot.Very little recoil felt on my 77 yr old hands with neuropathy, but maybe to someone else it is too much, but not nearly as much as I was told it would be.Swell little pistol, IMO.
I can still play at Carnagy Hall. lol

(quoted from post at 21:30:23 02/08/13) I talked to a guy 2 weeks ago, he had shot himself in the butt, damaged the sciatic nerve, now he has trouble with his ankle, the nerve is screwed up. He had it in a pair of jeans, picked up the jeans, the gun dropped out, he didn't know he was shot until he saw the blood. He surprised me, said it was a 9mm. Something sounds strange there. Any of those I've seen have a very significant hammer spring, takes a lot of effort to cock since the hammer fall is so short. And most have terribly heavy triggers too. Maybe it did happen like he said, but it wouldn't be the first time someone was goofing around and shot themselves then came up with a story about how it was the guns fault.

I think part of my problem is my hands are so big I can't get a good grip. I have a similar problem with my river lcp 380, but it does t bite no where as bad.

You may be right about longer barrels building more pressure, hence more feet/sec.

My buddy has probably one of every derringer made, plus he has had quite a few rechambered. Funny you mention a 500 s&w, he told me that's what he wanted to do in a derringer at Christmas. If they figure it out I will get a picture for here.

Enjoy those sweet looking custom holsters.
