Rooster tail (pic)

Hey guys!

Just a fun pic that my son snapped while I was 'blowin the shop out.

Nice picture I'll bet it's cold also. When Mom came from ND to Calif in the 40's, she left the snow there. I have never been around a snow blower. I have a question. Do you worry about sucking things into the machine, when blowing snow? Stan

Yes, but the auger and impeller are usually protected by shear pins, or perhaps slip clutches on the larger units.

I carry a handful of Chinese 1/4-20 bolts in the toolbox when I'm blowing snow. The soft steel makes a great shear pin.

Chief, a snow blower makes a dandy pitching machine. Almost anything tennis ball size and smaller that goes in, goes out traveling at about the speed of sound, well, maybe not quite that fast. You don't want to blow snow towards your neighbor's windows unless you don't like the neighbors. Jim

True story.
Back in the 70's, working at an AC dealer, I was tasked with mounting an old snow blower on the back of a snap coupler D17.
There were the standard characters I suppose every place like that attracted. This skinny little old guy kind of mumbled through non moving lips. Always had a fat, ugly buddy following along. He comes in and starts in on the snow blower idea. Instead of ignoring him, which I usually did, I had to goad him a little and ask what he's talking about. He says that's all well and good until you get something stuck in the snow blower. I asked how on earth is that going to happen? He came up with the idea of a fence post. I basically told him he was crazy. Why would a fence post be laying out in the drive?
Wasn't two weeks later another character comes in. He saunters out into the shop. Starts talking about the snow storm, and how he was blowing a drive when everything came to a halt. Got to digging around in the blower and found a fence post! A shop buddy turns to me and reminds me of my words, and then almost dies laughing. I was dumbfounded.

Wish I could get a pic like that while I'm blowing my driveway out- but it's ussually either dark, or I'm home alone doing it before my wife gets home with the kids. Last week I was blowing some of the nice powdery stuff and had a good tail like that going. I've got an older Ariens 1032, and it's a beast of a machine. Far better than the newer Swisher I had before that, which my brother bought from Menards and used it for a year or 2. I used it one year myself and sold it, and that almost covered the full expense of a much larger and better snow blower.

Wife was mad, but since then she's come to understand it was a good purchase...
