Are there any on-line diagrams of the rear axle /brakes for a 1979 GMC straight truck. I want to pull the rear axles to check the brakes. Thank you.

Pull the axle out (don't loose the little wedges), then the two locking nuts and retainer holding the outter wheel bearing. You can then pull that heavy drum off.

It's a job.

We have a couple of these on the farm and ours are disc brake. If they are drum type like Allen said but I will add loosen the wedge nuts then hit the axle to pop it loose. I still have a chunk of wedge in my shin/calf area of my leg when it broke loose and shattered. We also had a problem with the brake lines collapsing and not releasing the pads. Easy to check hit the brake good,go to each cyl or caliper and crack the bleeder. If it squirts you found a bad line.

There should be plugs that you take out, that will let you see the shoe wear without pulling the drums.
