I have a 1983 Suburban and I need to replace the signal turn swith, I have the steering wheel off and there is a notched metal plate over top of the switch, how do I get that plate off without breaking anything?I dont see anything holding it in place?thanks for any help

If memory serves, press down on the plate & a snap ring will appear on the steering shaft. It is not easy to remove/install without the "official" tool to assist you.

It can be done with out the tool but ain't easy. Hold it down with your thumbs while your helper gets a couple of screw drivers or one of those little tack pullers under the snap ring.

Did a couple without the tool. NO fun. Get the tool. I don't think they are expensive, or rent, beg borrow or steal one, make your owm.

Nothing but a U shaped piece of 1/4 x 1 inch steel with a pusher bolt in the middle and a sleeve to keep it centered on the steering shaft.

Try checking your local AutoZone store. They have a tool loan service for special, occasional use tools. You "buy" the tool, and when you're done, take it back for a full refund. It's worth the time to get the right tool. That snap ring can be a real bear to get out. A sharp pointed pick is very helpful, but watch your fingers!
Good Luck and God Bless.
