I would like to buy a paint gun. Everything I paint; I paint with rattle cans. I dont need a top quality gun though. I also dont want a junk one. Something to paint my trailers, tractors ect. ect. I have never used a paint gun before so I dont know what to look for or what to avoid. Thanks

If you have been using rattle cans just about any gun will be huge improvement once you learn how to use it. I am not a professional painter, far, far from it. I use an inexpensive siphon type gun. I think it cost around $40. As with any tool, experience is a great teacher, so practice with it a lot before painting anything fussy. Any good automitive paint store can give you a lot of good advice. Clean it carefully after each use and WEAR A GOOD MASK! Post your question on the painting forum and I'll bet you have lots of answers

HVLP is the way to go.You can buy starter kits with a primer gun, paint gun, and touch up gun for about a 100 bucks.Decent quality paint job can be done with them.Main thing is make sure to clean them right or you've thrown your money away.

I paint professionally and I use a harbor freight #97855. 16 bucks with a coupon. It would do everything except higher end automotive finishes.

Does a siphon gun work if its held horizontal instead of vertical? I would think it wouldn't suck the paint up. How do you paint the bottom of things when your laying on your back in the driveway?

Same here. At HF, you can buy an entire HVLP gun for less then paint suppliers charge for an extra cup. And if you go over the gun and clean up any rough edges, etc., they do just as good a job as some of the ultra high dollar guns.

Advantage of HVLP is they use dramatically less product. A 20 oz cup on an HVLP will cover approximately the same area as a 32 oz cup on a siphon gun.

The three most important things to remember on any paint gun are cleanliness, cleanliness, and cleanliness. Keep the gun clean and always strain the paint putting it into the gun.

Justin Goose and Stephen have both gave you some GOOD advise the COST OR PRICE of the paint gun has nothing to do or at least little to d with the quality of the paint job. Learning how to paint and using good quality paint are far more important. Goose after 50 years with siphon and airless I bought the 20 buck HF and have to say it sure does make the paint go farther .

if you spray paint with hardner added you need an air supplied mask and completly cover your self as in coveralls gloves etc.
the hardner is nasty stuff for humans

Good advise from Goose about cleanliness but a little more advise. There's only a small passage that actually sees fluid. Look over your manual and determine where the actual fluid tract is and just clean that tract and the outside of the air cap if it gets dirty. DON'T do like many and just submerge the whole gun in cleaning solvent. All the air control passages and seals never see paint and as such should never see solvent. Dirty solvent in the "air end" of the gun will quickly shorten it's life.

Neither HVLP or siphon sprayer will spray with the gun physically horizontal. You could take the cup off of a siphon sprayer and connect with hoses to a pressure pot and it would spray at any angle. I have a 2 1/2 gallon pressure pot with 25' of hose. I like to use it to spray cabinets because you can spray the inside of the cabinet without any real overspray creating orange peal.
