Removing 3020 Starter

Is there a special tool I can purchase to remove the starter from my 3020? If so, where can I get one or is there another "tool" I can use to remove the starter?

Are you talking about getting the back bolt out? If so, there is a special wrench, or I use a really short 9/16 wrench.

Yes- finally bought one years ago- it is as others described. Finally talked my friend into buying a JD- gave him that wrench as a gift! No more grief with a socket and extended handle. Years ago, cost about 10-12 bucks. It's a weird looking sucker, but wraps around the starter very nicely!

(quoted from post at 15:40:32 03/15/13) I have one from Craftsman no. 4376. 9/16 & 5/8 should work. Most times considered a starter wrench.
I usually modefy a cheapy wrench to suit the occasion,..the S wrenches don't always fit either

I bought one many years ago off the Snap-on guy just for removing the pump motor on a certain model of commercial dish washing machine.

Go to any Deere dealer they should have one in stock, not sure of the price but after trying to do without one price was not an issue. We have a dozen Deere tractors so that wrench has got a good workout over the years.

They are correct in that you need a JDE-80 starter wrench. It makes removing the starter fairly easy. Here is a picture of one.
