Have about 30 acres of smooth brom grass that hasn"t cut worth a darn the last year or so.
was told that it maybe root bound could be ?
don"t know how to unbound with out taring it all
up juat to dry to take that chance right now.
any help would be great.
I"LL be its raining right now in Nebr.

Find one of these and you might want to go over it more than once. Works great, but done do it in the hard freezing time. I did but WAS looking for some winter kill.

Have heard of "rootbound" but think the problem is lack of fertility. If you have an adequate stand pull some soil tests and go from there. Have never seen a sod that won't respond from an application of proper amounts of the right application of N P K and lime. Joe

What's that you have on top of the aer-way, a septic tank, LOL?? Get a Gen-Til unit, the tines are designed to go in, with out the tons of weight, that aer-ways need!

maybe root bound but I don't really believe that there is such a thing. I would be asking my cooperative extension to take a look. They will ask you first what are the results of your soil tests.

ain"t been brome weather the last couple years..i look for a short crop again. the cattle raisers are telling me they aren"t even fertilizing it this yr!

What do you mean by "hasn't cut worth a darn"? Do you mean it hasn't yielded much or it is difficult to cut? I think that Wheat Farmer and jdp have given you the best advice below.

"root bound"? Sounds like you are getting you hay field advice from a 'window-sill' gardner! Or maybe hay-field-in-a-clay-pot? Look elsewhere as in aeration, fertilizer, etc.

Jmor, That's what I was trying to think of! I knew that I had heard of it before. Yes, it is when your flower pot is too small for the plant.

I wouldn't thin out brome grass. The weeds will start coming in. Brome is a good weed killer because it does get so thick and root bound. A good shot of manure or other nitrogen rich fertilizer does wonders for heavy brome. Have you ever seen a brome pasture that doesn't generally look too good but has all those small tall green circles wherever a cowpie was deposited? I have CRP filter strips that have been in brome for 17 years now and the brome just isn't as tall and healthy as I would like it to be but I can't fertilize it so it's going to have to be short and pale for the duration.
