Working on a Sanpper tiller. When I pull the rope to start, it will not rewind. If I remove the entire Rewind-Starter Housing, I can pull the rope and it rewinds just fine. The square piece (don't know the offical name) that the pulley fits on does not turn backwards. Turning clockwise is th direction to start. You should be able to turn it counter-clockwise with your fingers (make a clicking noise) - this one will not turn counter-clockwise. Anyone know what is going on here?

That piece is the starter drive , and it's rusty in between the drive and the shaft. There is a pinhole in the end of the square with a felt pad inside of it . Drip some ATF into the hole and lift the square up and down to get the oil down the shaft , that should fix it if it's not too rusty.

NO! It needs to be dry in there or the works will be gummed up and it won't catch. Open it up, clean it good with brake cleaner, and then put some graphite in there to keep it lubed. If you put liquid in it the residue in there will turn to paste.

I said in the area between the shaft and the drive ,on top of the square drive, not the area under the cover with the 4 ball bearings.Put on yer glasses....
