Ford 601 vs Deere 850

I've been thinking about replacing the 601 and a Farmall cub with another more modern tractor. Something smaller yet able to do the work of the Ford and most importantly have lower gears so I can use a tiller. I see a Deere 850 2WD that I'm interested in but I don't know if it can handle the implements I use with the 601. The 3 that worry me the most are a very heavy aerator, a pretty big box blade and a 7 foot disk harrow.

Try looking for a Ford 3000/3600 or a Massey 135/230/240. the JD won't have draft control and that's probably 30HP at best. The Ford and Massey will have draft and position control and will be easier to add SVC etc to. And handle all your equipment easily.

i'd keep the 601 vs that 850.

upgrade to a 3cyl diesel ford. the 3600 is a nice one as mentioned... hyds improvements. etc..

If you are going to upgrade. Go on up and get a hydro. You won't be sorry. We have a 4320 Compact JD. Absolutely light years ahead. No it doesn't have draft control. Don't need it if you are going to use a tiller. Vic

We had a JD 950 at one time - next size up from 850. I also have a NAA Ford which is same basic tractor as 600 series. AN 850 JD is about 24 hp, 600Ford is about 30hp and the 850 is a bit lighter tractor. In low range it should be excellent for a tiller. Maybe you should keep your Ford for a while and replace the cub with the 850. Then you"d be covered either way.

Watch out for that JD 850 is that it may not have live PTO. It was an option along with power steering. Really the only better thing about the JD 850 would be the diesel engine. The JD 850 is a compact tractor where you Ford 601 is a utility tractor. Your Ford is just a heavier tractor.

You need to look for JD1020,1530 or 2040. Ford 3600, 3610, MF 135, 235. These would be a better match for you.
