Looking for opinions on this proposed tractor trade...seems like we always have plenty on here!! Thanks in advance.
I have a 65 IH 424 gas 3 pt, hydraulic outlets, diff lock, pto, gas, no power steering. Have owned it for 20 years about 10 years ago did a shade tree restoration..paint, seat, steering wheel, front tires, filters, radiator, grill, front grill guard.... looking to trade even up on a John Deere 430 Diesel Lawn and Garden tractor that runs well with mower, no hour meter with a 48 inch mower deck. Fair paint, needs some tin work and TLC.
I have another bigger IH gas (2656)3 pt tractor and really don"t use the 424 at all, just hate to give it up for sentimental reasons...but could use a smaller - bigger lawn tractor.
Ok boys lay it on me, am I an ignoramous?

I wouldn't but that is me. If I needed to mow a bunch, I would probably buy a 3 pt finish mower and use the 424 to mow with. Again, that's just me. I certainly wouldn't call you an ignoramous no matter what you decide. The fact that you mention sentimental reasons for keeping it is where I would be coming from too. Good luck with your decision.

You know what you have now - if you trade you may get an expensive surprise. I"d keep what I had.

I Agree with Paul check into a finnish or flail mower you already know what you have. The worst thing is making the trade and start wanting your old tractor back. Hope this helps
John

Our meter is under the hood on the right cowl by the shifter. Deck is either a 54 or 60 inch deck. You can buy a decent 430 for $2,500.00 and as much as $12,000.00. If you want the toughest mower JD ever built and you think it is a good trade for you then do it. I have made swaps that made no sense to anybody but me lots of times, the only one I would undo is selling a 1968 GTS Dart.

You can buy a new just like the Deere aftermarket 3pt for the 430 for about $400 and if you garden it'll make you appreciate the 430.The trade depends on which one you need the most.

I guess it depends on your yard. I tried to mow my yard with a 4320 compact JD and a 7 ft 3 point finish mower. Quite a few trees and other obstacles. Took longer than a GT325 JD with a 54 in mower. And had to weed eat a lot more. On the other hand my Son can mow his yard with the same rig in 20 minutes are less. nothing to go around. Vic

How much do they want to give you to take that Deere off their hands? $5,000 would not be enough for me to do it. No diesel for me.

Personally, I'd keep the IH. You know what you have vs. some unkown. If you need a lawn mower go get a big box store rider and take care of it and it will last you a long time. And you'll still have the 424 to putter with. I don't care for the JDs anyway, they seem to want too much for that green paint.
