Found another governor.

Identical unit except this one has a different linkage set up using two springs instead of one like the original.

It too, came off a Ford Industrial 200 engine.

Having a heck of a time getting it set right. If I manualy pull the lever (at the carb) to speed up the engine, the governor pulls it back okay.

However, I can't get it to pick up speed with the throttle lever in the cab.

Anyone got a clue to what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Allan

Picture of the old governor (action lever is removed).

Replacement unit is the same except has two opposing springs instead of just the one.

I've had 3 combines and 2 swathers with belt driven governors, but never really messed with them much. Might it work to remove the 2nd spring on the replacement? (but be ready to shut it down if it runs away?!) I'll have to take a look at my Versatile 400 swather - it has a Ford 200 also.

Think I'm gonna take both springs off and get it to respond with the throttle first. Then, start 'experminting' with the springs. :>)

Yes, bet this replacement is the same as your swather. The throttle cable 'throw' is probably different and think this is what is dealing me fits. :>(

take it you already know that the oil level in those governors has to be kept up. have also heard of failures due to lack of oil.

Allan, you lengthen the throttle rod to get more response, to the point that the govenor will roll or surge up and down, then shorten the throttle rod a tiny bit at a time til it will only hunt once before leveling out. You should be able to get real close by pulling the gov open with the cable and holding the carb at full throttle and set it there. I like to fit it tight on the long side.

The two spring thing was supposed to make things work a little smoother, what it did was make them harder to adjust. Have to find that sweet spot.
Someone mentioned adjusting and working on the high side. Myself I always go from no gas or idel and try to adjust the linkage to respond as I move the fuel feed lever to full speed.
