In another post, I posed the question as to why the power was so far from the thresher.
RayP(MI).550Doug, and Sam Drucker, I appreciate the answers, they all make sense. When I was a kid Grand Dad had his wheat threshed by a "travelin' threshing machine". I was fascinated by the equipment but was not allowed close enough to really see anything. But I do remember the long belt and a cloud of dust. This was in the late 1940s. Was at the threshing demonstration today, in fact, forking bundles into the separator...
asked my threshing machine steam engine host that same question. Said they needed space to keep the sparks from the engine away from the grain, straw, and dust. Makes sense to me! Many probably used the same belts when they changed to varous tractors from the steamers.
 
It's to keep from creating a DUST EXPLOSION. I've actually seen the aftermath of a dust explosion in a grain mill, - NOT a pretty sight, not much left of the mill either.
