Corn Chopper

Hi guys, I could use some help and information. I chop about 15 acres of corn a year and was using an international model 16 one row until tonight. It is getting tired and is time to upgrade. Thinking of a two row this time but my "big" tractor is 90 hp. Will that run a two row chopper? Any brands I should or should not consider? I have heard good things about fox? Thanks in advance.

We always opened our fields with a 2 row gehl powered by a 706 kraut. It was a load but it worked. You won't set any speed records but it is doable.

My dad started with a case 830 (70hp) then an 870 (85hp) then a 970 (93hp). and they all worked. He had a case 300 chopper first then new holland super 717 then a 718.

I would stay away from Fox or any other company that is no longer in business. This also means Gehl too. They are dropping support on just about all of there AG equipment unless it is a skid steer.

The cheapest main line would be NH. The 717, 718 are the oldest I would conceder. The 770 and 782 are newer. It depends on your budget. You should be able to get a fairly good NH chopper under $3000. In the off season even less than that.

Stay away from a JD 3800. The "J" knife pulls hard. You do not have enough tractor to sue one of them. The newer 3900 series will bring more money than the NH.

With either NH or JD you will be able to get parts for the future. The rest of the brands are a big unknown.

we chopped alot of corn with a New Holland 717 on a 970 Case but they are getting old with alot of acres through them, not to say you couldn't find a nice yet one yet, a Super has a heavier drivetrain and other improvements, I saw a really nice 770 NH on a sale last spring for $300 some bucks, I would bid on it if it wouldn't have had a 2 row wide corn head, of course if had a 30 inch head it would have brought more but many are just hiring their cutting done around here with 20 ft. 600hp Claas cutters

A former employer of mine chopped for his herd for many years with a turbocharged Ford 5000 and a Fox 2 row. That was back at a time when getting Fox parts was no problem.
A neighbor would use it one day a year to fill a small silo for beef herd and their MF 1100 didn't labor at all with it.
Like JD Seller said, just get the right machine that isn't obsolete.

Hi, spent many hours chopping corn with an IH #16 was a much improved machine over the previous #15.

I am with JD Seller, a NH chopper and I believe the newer corn head with the disk cutter and belts will fit the some of the older models.

The last chopper I owned was a 782NH. It had a head on it where the discs that cut the corn were out on the ends of the snouts. If the corn was not big and standing, it would cut the stalk which would fall over before the gathering chains could grab it. I don't recall the number on the head but someone on here will know what it is.

I ran a New Holland Super 717 two row and a JD 3800 two row with a 90 horse JD 4040. It was slow going in real good corn. I've got 135 horse tractor now. I ran a 781 IH for several years with it,but I bought an 881 last year. It's a bigger machine and actually seems to run easier. I don't know if it's because the feed throat and knives are wider so it taking in a thinner mat or what.
