cleaning air filter

Does anybody ever wash a paper type air filter? I just blow them out with air and then check them with a light bulb, but was thinking about washing them, like I have read in a operator manual. Can anybody tell the proper procedure?

1. What is your engine worth?

2. If you still insist on taking the chance, Donaldson sells special detergent for air filter washing (or at least used to) and the instructions on HOW to do it "correctly" were either in a separate Donaldson booklet with every new machine so equipped, or in the owner"s manual. Shouldn"t take to long with GOOGLE to find the instructions and a source for the detergent (IF still available.)

We tried washing them at Fort Ord it was about half as good as blowing them out and took all day. I take mide and tap them lightly on a good surface until they are fairly clean then blow them out from the inside. They don't ha e to be spotless just get the big deposits out. Leave the washing to those who have more time than money.

I had to do an early overhaul to a low houred JD 1020 once because the owner washed his air filters. I think the book says once is OK,but what happens with time is the paper pores open up letting dirt in !
By new elements and replace them on some kinda time schedule.
