Chevy 1 Ton Tag Question

OK. This will be in Kansas, but I just bought a 04 Chevy 3500 truck. When I get my tag does the pickup tag need to cover both the truck and trailer? My trailer, I believe, is a 14,000# rated trailer. PJ Gooseneck with dual singles. I think 7000# axles, but maybe #7500. Not sure on that. So to keep under the 25K commercial rules, if I tag the truck with a 24M tag, will that cover the combination. I asked the local tag office and they couldn't give me any advice. (Small County Seat) Any thoughts? Thanks - Bob

Don't know about your state but federal would be combination weight of truck and trailer for the truck tag with a trailer over 10,000 pounds. There should be a GCWR for your truck, you may have to check with a dealer for that weight number. Here in Pa we need to be able top prove that number to get a combi tag.

In Iowa, the license on the truck covers the weight of the truck AND trailer. The trailer still has to have its own tag. The D.O.T. does not care what the loaded trailer weighs, but they ARE concerned with the TOTAL weight of the truck AND the trailer. I can only ASSUME it is the same in Kansas.

My state the truck tags need to be for the weight of truck and trailer and whatever load is on them to be legal. Can get a permanent trailer tag but the truck one determines legal or not.
With a 14,000 gooseneck I have 24,000 tags on the truck. More money for the DMV.

Thanks for the replies. I am sure it will need to be 24M, which will cover truck and trailer, but I need to see what the GVW of the truck is itself first to see what the combination of the truck and trailer GVW is? Then tag accordingly I guess. Thanks again for the replies. Bob

In Washington, you can go either way- put enough tonnage on the truck to cover both truck and trailer, or do each one separately. But usually makes more sense to put it all on the truck, especially if you have 2 or more trailers, then they're all covered for just one price.

The GVW stamped on the pillar of the truck really isn't what determines how much tonnage you need- because that is just the GVW that the truck itself can carry, not how much it can carry AND tow. I add the GVW of the truck to the loaded capacity of the trailer- I think I have 20,000 on my rig now.

I live in Kansas you need cover weigh of truck ,trailer and load to be legal. Your 24m is good for gross wt. of 24,000 lb. your tare wt. will determine your payload.

Indiana the plates on the truck covers the truck. We get to pay more for a plate on the trailer that covers the trailer weight. Then they add the 2 plates to determine if it is combined over 26,001. If combined plates come to 26,000, they also look at individual weight so sometimes it is beneficial to shift the weight a little if you are close to the limit. Load more forward will add to the truck axle load.

The 12 ton license in Iowa to cover my truck and trailer is over $600 a year. Most people run the standard license and hope to not get caught.
