O/T Refrigerator/Freezer Problem

I have a Maytag Side by Side and the freezer evaporator froze solid. So the temp in the freezer just at freezing and the Ref at about 55 Deg F. Just use the refer section for cold drinks in the basement but the freezer is important (lots of frozen homemade soups).
I have attached a pic of what I believe is the evaporator orifice. At one time there was some putty type material (kind of the consistency of chewed gum)as you can see it has fallen off and gotten all over the coils. What do you think this stuff would be called and is there a substitute that may be found at the big box stores? Not sure of the temps it needs to endure due to the auto defrost feature (that may not be working too well).

Thanks for taking a look.

Fix the defrost timer or thermostat or other problem in the defrost system and/or correct a low airflow through the evaporator problem and don"t worry to much about the missing "cork insulation tape" on the dryer. The only purpose it serves is to prevent moisture form condensing/freezing in that area and later dripping outside the drain pan. It MAY have been melted off by the defrost mechanism malfunctioning and overheating. If the machine works after repairs, you can pick up some tape at a refrigeration supply place or auto parts store should be able to order it from their AC supplier.

We just had the same problem and replaced the defrost sensor or control looks like the one that clips on your tube there in your picture that was behind a panel near the evaporator in the freezer. Been working find so far this week, The boys looked it up on line and found the parts. Good luck with it.

I agree with Dustycoal. Our Maytag was doing the exact same thing, and the little clip-on sensor was bad. About a $15 part. You have to test the sensor while the coil is frosted. Clip one wire to isolate it and you should have continuity on a good frozen sensor. When the frost melts, it goes open and shuts off the defrost heater. If you wait until the ice has melted you'll get an "open" on a good sensor and won't know if it's faulty. If it tests good, then it could be either the defrost control, the heater, or the air flow. I know absolutely nothing about fridge/freezers, but did manage to fix one in my lifetime. Good luck.

There is 3 parts to a defrost system.. The timer the heating element and the thermo disk it"s a time on time off. The timer puts power to the element the thermo disk turns off the heating element when the temp hit the themo disk set point. Than the timer times out and turn the ref. back on. Another thing check the door gasket make sure they are sealing good The timer they hide the all over the box. The thema disk is on the inside coil. Evaporator coil. Heating coil is on that coil to

Thanks for the replies.
I tested the defrost thermostat and it reads about 240 ohms warm and .2 when cold so I think that is working plus the defrost heater has continuity. The gasket is in good condition and seems to be sealing. That leaves the Adaptive Defrost Control Unit. Yeah I get to spend money.

I had a tenant call me, ref isn't working. I just installed it about 6 month ago. I went to Lowes and had a new one delivered. I look at it this way, if I get free delivery and removal of old ref, why should I work. Had Lowes put old ref in front of garage door. It sat for a few days. I got around to it testing it out. Made sure defrost timer was moving, drain was clean, made drain deposit condensate on garage floor instead in tray above compressor. Every thing checked good. -5 in freezer and 32 in box. Only thing I found might have caused my problem was tenant had the control in freezer set on coldest setting. Tenant did the same thing with the new ref. On the coldest setting very little air gets to the box below and eventually the drip tray will not drain, it ices up, eventually air stops moving and ref stops cooling. Now I have another ref on stand buy.
