How much tractor for 3pt 3-bottom plough?

Hi, I have a 4wd Kubota MX5000 (about 50hp) with loaded rear tires. Do you think it would pull a 3pt, 3-bottom mould board plough in Sand-Loam?

It's an old Ford plough with tripping shares, coulters. My next question is will the tractor pick it up off the ground with the 3pt ? I think this is probably a very heavy plough, like this one:

If it's too heavy, or hard to pull, could I just unbolt the rear-most plough share and have a two bottom?
Thanks for any advice,

Troy

A good rule of thumb is one hp for every inch of plow. For example, if you have 3 bottom 14" plow you would need 3 x 14 = 42 hp.

I would think your 50 horse Kubota would have no
problem with that plow.If you want to know if it will lift the plow, hook it up and try it.Same with plowing.Drop it in the ground and try it.3rd or 4th gear would be about right.

50 HP is engine net HP on that tractor. PTO HP = 42 or 44 depending on whether it's an SU or not. No drawbar HP listed as it was never tested for drawbar pull. Probably about 38. That plow will be a tussle for that tractor but I'd give it a try. It will take a while to scour those moldboards off so they'll pull easier but in sandy loam that won't be a problem. Rear lift is rated at 2315lbs 24" behind the link ends. Do you have a loader? If so, leave it on. Fill it with rocks. Does the tractor have the optional draft control? A big help if it does. Can be added by dealer. They're tough little tractors but if you do a lot of heavy pulling over time it may start to pop out of the primary pulling gear. Probably 2nd. Make sure to use Kubota Super UDT trans fluid. Don't skimp. Good luck. (;>))

What transmission?

Not with a hydro unless you are speaking of a small plot.

Draft control option?

Sod?

Kubotas are light. Ballast? R4s?

Not enough information.

An MX5000 is a light tractor, maybe 4500 lbs, I think its closer to
52-54 pto hp, and the drawbar hp is more like 35 limited by the
weight. I have an L5030HSTC with the same motor but weighs
6500 lb with the tires loaded and loader, in tough sod it will barely
pull a 2 x12. In light soils it flies along with 2x16 set deep in 2wd.
It will pick up my 3 bottom but it won't go anywhere with it at
working depth.

1st pic - 2 bottom Overum vari-width on 50 hp Kubota that works from 12-16" in tough soils
2nd pic - 3 bottom KV AB85 vari-width that is way too much for the Kubota to pull with out constantly spinning out
3rd pic - 3 bottom KV on the bigger MF, could use an add-a-bottom to make it 4

We had a '64 model Ford Super Dexta rated at 38 hp that pulled 3 16s in sandy loam in s.e. Ga in 3rd gear at 3.5 mph. Eventually 3rd gear bearing failed and we went to fourth gear...It pulled it but took several minutes to get to speed and feel happy. Surely your Kobota will be able to do the same.

you try that where i live and we will get to laugh at you, maybe in sandy loam it will work but in the clay here and the white hvy in the bottoms you better pile on some wt and get that 65 to 70 minimum ready

I don't know anything about you tractor, but I would think it
would pull it. I think my 55hp Ford 4610 would pull 3 bottoms
in our rockey clay. My little 1720 28hp pulls this 2 bottom in
our crummy soil, but it has the loader and 4wd to help it. Good
luck.

If the price is right buy the plow and give it a try.
If it's too much for your tractor it's not hard to drop a bottom on that Ford 101 plow.
I did that on mine.

It all depends on what type soil you're planning on plowing. Here on my place you could plow my garden/truck patchs no problem but you'd be dead in the water trying to plow some of my Red Clay pasture land.

If the price is nice, I would try to grab it. Not sure how you would do in sandy-loam.

My tractor is similar to your Ford 3930 4wd, loaded tires. It struggles with a 2-16 at times. But my soil is heavy clay, and I only break sod with it, I have never plowed across a field that has been planted the previous spring. I rotate planting maybe every 6-7 years with landscape trees.

Go for it if you have R1 tires....

MX-5000 was a small "real" size tractor as opposed to a compact

Just don't plow too deep or when too wet and you'll be fine.

Looks as if you will be putting New Shins on it right away..

That is a nice looking plow of "average" weight..heavier than the plows made for the 8N/9N but not as heavy as the ones made with the heavy box-beam..

Do put the needed new pieces on AND clean the moldboards and cover-boards up before you attempt to use it..(then, KEEP it from re-rusting).

An Angle-Grinder with a Thin "Cut-off" wheel is your friend, for this job..
Hold it at about a 30 degree angle and it will only remove the rusty surface and not even scratch the steel..!
Use a Mask and safety glasses...

Ron..

It might pull it if you can get hitched to it. The plow pictured has Cat II lower link pins. Does your Kubota?
Beyond that... that's not really the plow you want in sod... I'd want something with a longer board. The one pictured is just a stubble plow. It will work in sod but they do pretty rough work...

You asked 2 questions and not for opinions so the answers are yes, 50 hp/loaded tires/loam ground and yes it will lift it no problems.
