wanting to buy used tractor with front end loader to move round bales ,can anyone recommend the size of tractor needed ,maximum bale weight will be about 1600 pounds Thanks do you think a case 800 will do job?

if the bales are going to weigh 1600lbs the tractor is probably a little light... does it have 3 point hitch or something similar to hang some weight off the back? At the very least it will need wheel weights and/or fluid in the rear tires. I move my bales with a Nuffield that weighs about 5500lbs, but it also has fluid in the rear tires (16.9/30) and 200lbs of wheel weights on it, and i can carry a bale on the rear 3 point hitch.

I use a Ford 841 with a heavy duty loader and a back blade with 6-85lbs suit case weights and a wheel weight that is 150lbs to lift my 6X6 bales and that is just enough and you still have to be careful or you can have a bad problem. The first year I did the 6X6 bales I could not lift them with my 841 because the rear wheels would not stay on the ground

Case 800 will do it but you need a tractor that has frame rails. The Case 800 will put all of the stress on the engine block. The engine block on our Case 800 split wile feeding a big round bale with a front end loader. Great tractor! Just needed frame rails for loader work

My old Massey 590 (same as a 290 or 690) has no bother lifting 2 bales of hay but it will only l;ift one bale of wet silage. It will lift one silage bale on the loader with no trouble. At 1600 lbs a Massey 135 should lift a bale on the rear.

I have fluid in the rear tires, but still keep my 3 pt. disc on all winter. The disc is 8 ft. and I drop it to get off and on my WD45, with DUAL loader. Sure wish I had power steering, but the weight of the disc helps turning. Dropping the disc at the gates, keeps me from having to set the brakes.

Do you want to move them with the FEL or a 3 pt spear at the rear? I front loader on an 800 Case will do it, especially if the loader uses a frame and you use a bale spear attachment, not just a spear chained to the bucket. But it won't be the best machine for the job. Something later with more modern hydraulics and a heavy duty front ax, something more along the industrial lines, will handle a large bale out front better. If you go rear mounted then the problem with an 800 Case is that the Eagle hitch just doesn't lift as high as a standard cat 1 or 2 3 pt. I had to fab up a top link mount over the PTO shaft for my 800 to work good with the bale spear and it still requires backing through some ditches or the bale gets pulled off the spear.

We only ever use 4x4'6" bales here....our grass is too wet and dense to use 5s or 6s. sometimes the straw buyers like the larger bale but the vast majority of balers here are 4 footers. Wet grass silage can weigh a tonne in these bales!
I use a Claas 46......And the grass is a mix of timothy, italian ryegrass, meadow fescue and even a bit of cocksfoot plus some natural stuff that just keeps creeping in!

I've moved dozens with an Allis Chalmers WD and loader, but would love to get something bigger. Dad used to use a Case 830 CK to load 2000 lb bags of beans in his planter. Worked just fine. My next loader tractor will be a skid loader.
