working on my farmall cub, again, this time i put a new carb kit in it trying to solve a over fueling issue [ black smoke out the stack and fuel fouled plugs] this is after i replaced the mag points, took 2 sets to get one that worked, the condenser, it took 6 to get one that worked finaly found that one online nos, rotor, cap, wires and plugs parts bought online, thats all ill say, but not fleabay, and never at tsc! now i replaced the plugs again, since they were so fuel fouled they were causing a miss, that set has about 20 acres of grass mowing on them when i started the tractor it ran fine, no black smoke now,...and then the engine warmed up, now i have a miss, the engine was overhauled just before i got it and all 4 cylinders have good compresion, doesnt burn oil, so my bet is a bad new wire, which are the solid core wires, not the new grapfite stuff for electronic ignition, cub is all original 6volt mag ignition, so where is there any parts worth buying these days, the local auto parts store has been bought out and the goobers in there now may have seen tractors on tv, but thats about the limit of their knowledge so thats out, im ready to trade one of the pickups for a good A or B, or even a C with a belly mower and just move on
while it looks nice, this tractor is a full time using tractor ,like all mine are so i need it to run, and run right when i need it

I use A&I parts with good luck, I am a dealer for them is why I use them, we sell Riley tractor parts and Tisco parts, where I work and have had good luck with their products. Other than paying the high prices from the OEM, do not know where else to suggest.

Couple things to check, first is the oil bath air cleaner plugged up? Maybe mud daubers got nests in there or the screen is plugged up. Other is check the choke butteryfly to see if it is opening all the way.

the air cleaner is freshly serviced i thought about that too,it was ready to clean but it wasnt overly dirty and the choke is opening completly , its only the tab on the side of the carb now as the attaching piece for the rod broke, and i havent replaced it, its not smoking now so i think ive fixed that issue with the kit, but i dont understand why its dropping a cylinder with all new parts in the last 3 months

Did you check the bushings in the distributor. ? Grab the rotor and wiggle it side to side. If thre is excess play it affects the point gap and cause misfires.

Eric, I do not have a site, I am a small time guy, me email is open if you want to tell me what you are looking for, I can and will get you a price on things and can ship to you, as I am in central IL.

Don't forget to do a compression check and adjust the valves. Many forget this part of a tune up.

the valves should be fine i adjusted them last spring and the compression is between 100- and 120 on all 4 cylinders, one thing did just occure to me, spark plug heat range, im running autolite 386 in this tractor just because thats what it had in it when i bought it, the engine was fresh then, and i just assumed they would put the proper plug in it, is that right or is 386 the wrong heat range

ok ill save this, and give you a mail, i need to figure out just what in the world i got going on here if i can, all the ignition system is new, as well as the carb kit now, there has to be a reason its doing this, its driving me nuts, this thing is not a new car ,its a simple old tractor ill get back to you, and get what i need right now im thinking either a bad new plug, or plug wire, it would seem if it was points condenser coil [ new too] or rotor it would either run, or not run

For high voltage wires use metal conductor wires, copper is preferred, but steel is ok. I never use the resistance wires on anything old, ok for new stuff. Make sure you don't have any cracks or scratches on your distributer cap, inside or out. 2nd on NAPA ignition parts, usually Standard ignition blue point is ok, but not always. What kind of plugs are you using? I have had the problems you are experiencing when I was using Champion plugs, no problems like that with AC or Autolite.

Move the plug to a different hole, or put in a good used one to see if it is the plug. Many end up bad. Jim

If your using an Autolite 386 that is a resistor plug. You should be using a 3116 non resistor. Resistor plugs don"t do so well with mag ignitions.

thanks jason, this may well be the core of the problem, i have the actual owners manual that came with the tractor new, as well as a reprint service manual for it and no where does it give a number for the plugs in either manual, i'll get some of these and see if that straightens it out
