Vent or not??

Building a truck rack in the shop, using some square tube for head board and capping the ends, would you drill some holes in the bottom side to let it vent or let it closed up?

Mike, I think I would base that decision on how well I trusted my welds and what might happen to the rack in the future.

If I were really sure everything was water tight, I'd leave them sealed up, especially the horizontal runs.

But if there is doubt about the welds, if you're using used steel, or if there is a possibility holes will be drilled later, I would drill some drain holes, and try to design it so they would only be necessary at the bottom of the vertical members.

Definately holes in Mn. You will be glad you did. When using tube I always try to leave the lower end open, I've found it rusts less inside with the tube open so it dries out than trying to keep the salt out which is imposible to do. If it's closed it will stay damp inside always and rust faster. When I did head ache racks if it had a steel floor I would cut out a hole in the floor under the uprights. If it was wood floor I would use a tube wider than the front crossmember and leave the part that hung over open.

If I have to make a closed tube, I always drill and tap a quarter inch hole, then weld and let cool. When project is done I put a bolt in the hole and tighten. Don't know if that is correct way to do it or not but it works for me.

If you are sure your welds on your end caps are "sealed" you wont have a problem. If you have the tiniest pin hole allowing oxygen/water to enter it will rust, probably get enuff water in it to freeze in the winter and swell the tube.
If I was doing it I would ensure it was sealed, that way you are not going to get rust running out of your "vent holes" This is assuming you are using steel tubing, and not having it hot dipped galvanized, or something?

Thanks for the advise, I have seen them split open from freezing, here's my plan, I will drill a hole between each tube where it's welded to the next one and so on down the uprights and to the bottom cross piece and then only vent that bottom one to the outside, probably in the center, it will be sandblasted and epoxy primed and painted with acrylic urethane, thanks again guy's, have a great day!
