Northern lights.

My father said he heard on the news tonight if you look to the north you can see the northern lights. He said he saw it years ago. He might take a ride tonight and look. Anybody else hear that or see it tonight?

I know they were saying you should be able to see them this morning, but it didn't clear out here so we couldn't. I hadn't heard about tonight.

saw on the news that a large solar flare yesterday was supposed to make them visible as far south as Colorado and central Illinois. I remember a few years ago here in NE IN something like that happened and they were clear down here, red sky real weird. Probably be too cloudy here the next few days to see any thing this time.

I think once in my life I have seen them from this latitude.
Several years ago, one dark, fall evening we were coming to the house at the end of a long corn harvest day. I was admiring the clear sky and stars when I started seeing what I thought were funny clouds. Then a pattern developed that had to be something else. The result was whitish lines coverging overhead. Then it disappeared as fast as it had appeared. I did a little snooping on line, and sure enough, it was some kind of magnetic phenomenon.

I"ve seen them many times having lived and worked in northern Canada for many years. there is supposed to be a very spectacular display from a solar flare over the next couple of days.

Major solar eruption (CME) happening on the Sun right now. Although I can't see the lights...too far south.

Ya, for all I know dad could have heard it 3 days ago and just remembered it tonight, lol

Local weather guesser in SW WI said you should be able to see them if you live on the line from Colorado to Illinois and North.

Have seen them from here in the past (catskills) and have seen some great displays from Potsdam NY

Wish I could see them from down her in NC. Got to see them years ago when I was in the Navy when we went above the Artic Circle. I"ve got to say it was one of the most beautiful, yet eerie, sights I think I have ever seen.

The most spectacular display of the northern lights wuz several years ago vhen I vas driving to Minot, North Dakota, I could allmost drive vith the headlights off.

I have been fortunate to have seen them twice in my life. The first time I was only seven, maybe eight years old. Dad had stepped outside to pee one night and came in all excited, we all stepped out and watched the lights for several minutes. Later,I was in my early 30s and looked out the back door one night and saw a display for just a few minutes. That is unusual for central North Carolina.

Well, there you go! Another good thing about living way up here is that we see the Northern Lights regularly. These days it's harder to see them because of all the light scatter from the bigger towns near me. But in a clear night if they're making a show it can be awesome! I've seen them where they look almost like colored water moving across the sky at incredible speed. Greens, reds, blues and white and every shade between. They don't photograph well IMO. Movies don't even come close to accurately giving you an idea of what they look like.

I was on my way to Norway on the USS Siapan back in the 1980's. We were off Newfoundland one night, and the lights were VERY bright. I even took a few photos of helicopters on the deck with only the aurora as light.

I still see them often on the darkest of nights up here in NNY.Light from Malone just 2.5 miles N and Montreal 60 miles N/E really dims them.At times I've seen them reach up to 60* or 70* above the horizon.
