OT Pheasant hunt

This is what we have to do for pheasant hunting in central Ohio. What we did is called a European tower hunt. Suits me fine as I have a difficult time walking in weeds and thick cover.

Ten hunters get spaced in a circle 100 yds. from the tower. Ten birds are released, the hunter then shift to the next blind until all 100 birds have been released. Then groups of 3 or 4 guys go with a set of bird dogs into the surrounding farm field to hunt the ones that got away.

Main farm must be at least 120 acres. Several farms are involved as thousands of pheasants are shipped to markets all over the country . They have tractors and small equipment for feeding and maintaining the large flying pens.

not far from me sounds like shooting fish in a barrel though but if you cant get them in the wild then i guess thats the next best thing

Have not see a pheasant that was raised in the wild here in Ohio since I was a kid (60 years ago). Too many coyote and red fox plus the lack of cover. Although wild turkey are thriving , as they are more well suited for our conditions.

Have not even seen many quail since the blizzard in the late seventies. That pile of pheasant had 48 in it, meaning over half got away. More difficult shooting than you would think. Have hunted pheasant in South Dakota a half dozen times, now that is pheasant hunting country.

Dan, that is more appropriately called a "shoot" rather than a hunt. Much more like an English driven game shoot than an American walk-up roughshooting hunt.

Still a challenge, if the birds are good and fly high and the wind is whistling.

Met a fella up in Utah that raised pheasants. He would load up his plane, fly a bunch of pheasants over to Las Vegas for the gambles to shoot when they wanted to leave the tables for awhile. Gamblers paid dearly to shoot a pheasant!

I went to many of those European Pheasant Hunts in the 90's at Trapper Jims in the thumb of Michigan. Some of the most fun you can have legally..

I've never done the tower shoot, but I have been to a few preserves. I'd rather kill one wild pheasant than 100 pen-raised birds, even though many pen birds are good flies and I have missed my share.

That is not a pheasant hunt it is a pheasant slaughter. I would be ashamed of myself if I took part in that killing.
I am surprised that the moderator of this site allowed that posting.

My sister lives just up the road from there towards new washington do they put birds out to hunt in the fields too?

Texas quail have disappeared for the most part and game preserve hunting has replaced wild hunting.
