propane shortage

Are any of you having trouble getting propane. The governor of Alabama has declared a state of emergency over propane shortage. Glad I got my tank filled a couple weeks ago.

I heard some companies in MN are rationing customers to a 250 gallon order. Can not purchase more than that at a time.

Michigan governor also declared state of emergency, lifting hour restrictions on drivers of LP trucks. Took a delivery today. Driver told me not to worry, as I was prepaid. They would honor the contract. (Now when they run out, how will they do that?) But apparently they"re not too worried.
This crisis has a number of causes: Of course the unseasonably cold weather has a hand. But the corn and soybean crop has needed a lot of drying - huge amounts of propane. Plus there have been a lot of export sales. Probably a bunch of other reasons as well.

The wife called to order propane this morning. 100 gal. limit and $3.79.9 per gal. Somebody's making some money off this cold spell & it sure isn't me. We're in S.E. Ohio. Keith

RayP(MI),
Glad I converted my daughter's house in St. Clair to NG this past summer. Bought it year ago in Nov. and cost me $1200 last winter to heat it w/ propane while I was fixing it up. Kept it at 55 deg only! Was very glad to see the truck picking up the tank.

Book and pay for it in the summer. They monitor the tank and stop in to fill the tank before I run low. Sitting in a warm house and I just wave at the truck driver.
LA in WI

Called my propane company (Amerigas) a couple of days ago, they said no problem they have plenty. This is Northeastern Ohio.

East central Illinois our company sells propane to lift truck etc customers. We know it's going up so yesterday I call my home driver, I don't own my tank, ask about propane He says don't buy it now 3.39 gal. last summer I paid less than 1.50. Mostly I heat with wood and happy about it

The propane shortage as with many things are just another way to cost the common man more $$. Propane is one or the main exports and the U.S. exports more then they keep as per the news tonight

Just read that one of the major pipelines that used to transport propane into the midwest has been shut down to be retrofitted for transporting a chemical to dilute bitumin. Apparently this plant will be shipping this substance from Illinois into Canada rather than gas coming from Canada to the US. Smells like a back door method for Keystone to get their way! Do they really think we"re that stupid that we couldn"t figure this one out?

Wow how times change. Back in the mid 1950's in Texas my dad and I ran our deep water irrigation wells, farm equipment, trucks and pickup trucks on propane. We paid 7 cents per gallon.

Where in eastern Iowa?

I would like to sell them some for $4.50 and I would still make $2.25 a gallon.

Must be a Ferrell gas customer paying that.

Gary

There is no shortage, but there is a heck of a bottle neck at the pipeline. Our driver has been waiting in line to load for 8 to 10 hours since fall. It started with all of that wet corn and we have just never got caught up. Our price(wholesale) has doubled this week.

I agree. Isnt it odd to shut one down in the middle of winter? Especially when people could freeze.

I realize that there factors that cause the demand to vary, but I still feel that by and large, shortages don't just happen, they are created!

Article on al.com cited the need for poultry farmers to heat the chicken houses, among other reasons for the state of emergency. Here on the Gulf Coast in Baldwin County the price for our old community center building was 2.359 in mid December. @ the house I"m all electric, and not used to the continuous cold weather in our deep south. I know at least 2 batteries are toast from the last deep freeze we had 2 weeks ago. This is gonna be expensive.

I guess many suppliers bought into the global warming story and thought it would not get cold this year ?

I spent 14years in the industry. Most of this price rise and manufactured shortage IS caused by the speculators buying millions of gallons and holding on to it till they get their price. 99.9% of the time they make millions of dollars from us small guys.

that is because Amerigas, is a big wholesaler. they canceled wholesale contracts to keep for their retailers. hence why they have plenty of gas. which hurts independents and companies that buy their gas wholesale from Amerigas.

Just called a few minutes ago as my 500 gallon tank is on 25%. I could possibly make it on it, but I really don't want to chance it. Our backup furnace and fireplace is propane, primary is a heat pump. Anyway, said the most they could deliver is 250 gallon and the price is a whooping $3.99 per gallon (own my own tank). It was $1.69 per gallon back in August.

This makes me love my Coal, even more. How can you guys afford Propane? My total cost to heat 1800 sq ft this winter, in the Ohio River Valley, will be $550, and this will be almost double of what it normally has been.

Supplier in Mitchell has plenty of it, at, drum roll, $4/gal. He told me to wait as long as I can. We'll see how far the remaining 160 gals takes me.
Has anyone seen a digital thermostat that goes BELOW 40 degrees?

In November we could not get propane (drying) but it was 2.00 a gal. Now we can have all you want at 6.00. Speculators pure and simple.
