having an intermittent problem with our f450 s duty 5 sp w overdrive. truck will run fine for days then all of a sudden loose power and rpm. will barely maintain 40 mph. been to several shops, cannot find problem. not throwing any codes. fuel filter is new again. fuel is running conditioner. did it again today, shut the truck off and re-started, an truck is back to normal with slightly rough idle, but will maintain normal operation. any ideass?

Have you looked at the air cleaner box? When was the last time you changed oil in it; they don't like OLD oil.

Allan

oil has been changed recently, and the air box is clear, new filter too. 2 diesel shops have worked on it, they threw a couple grand in parts at it, and it still does it. the oil pressure switch/sensor above the left valve cover has also just been changed too.

If it isn't throwing a code...
In my opinion I'd be looking at fuel pressure
Might try & run a gauge on, or lack of air,
might be cause.. Ice's over air filter maybe?

Glennster, couple questions....

Did you clean the rock catcher attached to the fuel filter housing?

I suspect your CMP (cam position sensor) is going out. Its possible for it to be going out and not set a code. It NORMALLY will set a code, but sometimes it does not. If the CMP is "loosing its way", it will cause intermittent run problems that correct themselves after re-starting.

the truck shop changed the filters a month ago, and we just changed the one on top of the engine 2 days ago. we are buying fresh fuel from a shell truck stop nearby, the other two trucks are running fine on that fuel.

hoof print, you may be on to something with the cam sensor. when it boggs, it starts running rich and belches smoke.

I know it a Ford BUT..
My 04 Duramax did the same thing and it turned out to be one injector control line was streched to far and kinked around a bend. There was a notice on it. Two mechanics kept guessing but one knew there was a buliten and looked it up--that fixed it.
Wasn'r cheap though.

Back pressure sensor could be it. sometimes set code sometimes not. Tube on passenger side from manifold feeds the sensor on the right front of engine. Kinda looks like a oil pressure sender sensor. Seen a lot of them. If it is, make sure tube is clear with a coat hanger.

If its not that by a duramax or a new ford diesel that will have the cab removed 8 times in its life to do any type of engine work. We do them everyday.

White smoke or black smoke? I've had my hands on more navistar 444's than I care to admit. The poster who mentioned the back pressure valve has a good point too. If it hisses and blows white smoke when it boggs, it very well could be the back pressure flapper hanging closed

All it takes is 1 bad sensor or connection to a sensor and they will derate on power .Even if they start a little hard from cold or a low battery it can cause the computer to derate power. If no codes when it does that try shutting it off and starting it again.

i just had a cam sensor delivered here to the shop. waiting for the truck to limp back and try that. we are supposed to get real cold again tonight with blowing snow, need to get the winch truck back on line. one of the roll backs just came in, they stripped the winch on the deck. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Thanks Bob! That is a very good explanation. Much appreciated. I can see now why they want clean oil. 3000 PSI in the rail. With that pressure, the flow rate/path and port sizes, I am surprised they are not more problematic. What a PITA that must be if there is a catastrophic failure and metal particles contaminate the lubrication system!

Check over that harness that goes down the front of the engine to the cmp as well. That harness likes to chafe in the loom and cause trouble.

I would try a cam sensor- I have seen them act up and not throw a code many times. And not too expensive to try, as long as you have ruled out starving for fuel, which it sounds you have, Mark

A guy just loves shops that have fitters in that just throw piles of our greenbacks in the wind. And Dont have proper mechanics, any more to know whats wrong and how to fix it, right first time.
My cam sensor went out it either stopped in traffic or got a hard stutter at highway speed once in a while. Put the new sensor in It was fine until damp weather . it stutters and trips the light. Never did that before. Guys think the plugins bad or wire has a bad spot the damp affects. does yours change with the weather like mine does.
Regards Robert
