12 or 24 volt, whats the difference

I just bought a couple of old starter motors, they will do a Perkins p6 or V8 I think. One is 12v while the other is 24v. Why are they different and what are the benefits? Is one more powerful or faster than the other? Just curious.

with the 24 volts you get twice the power with the same amps. wiring could be half as large. starter size could be lots smaller with 24 volts.

Well given your area yes since it is rare that you over in Scotland have many truly hot days. Yep been in Scotland a few times the Holy Lock area. I forget the town there

Yes but..you would need one 24v battery or 2 12v batteries wired in series. The big problem is the method of recharging the batteries. A lot of John Deere tractors were 24v but most have been converted to 12v.
