Self-propelled baler

Howdy,

Found an old New Holland self-propelled baler (believe it is one of the SP-166 models). I have heard that 305 were built and was wondering if there is any idea of how many are left out there? Thanks and God bless.

I bought one from Otto Meyer in Green Isle, Minnesoda aboot the year of 1987. Sold it to a man by the name of Bob Bowersmith in Vine Grove, Kantucky.
He takes it to the Lanesville, Ind. Heritage festival every summer and the Brandingburg,Ky. tractor show.

They were made in New Holland Lancaster Pa. if you talk to some one from Kinzers ,Rough and Tumble you will be able to get all your questions answered ,that is along RT.30 just outside of Lancaster Pa I think they are verry rare If I am not mistaken one of the fellows that started Rough and Tumble invented it , let me know how you make out !!!

One came up on a sale in Bagley, WI about 5 years ago. It was a runner and brought $17,000. Back then, I think they were saying 21 known to exist, maybe half runners. Sounds like they were so unpopular that the last unsold ones were stripped back down and made back into pull-types. Dunno why that would be - riding a bus seat on the plunger housing while listening to two Wisconsin gas engines scream...

Just like with any other limited production item HOW can anyone POSSIBLY know how many still exist, unless it is a real $$$ and classic item and people join a registry, and register what they have, by serial number?

Who knows how many old balers are sitting in barns and tree rows? It's not like they check in every year to let the company know they are still around!

Howdy, As dealers we were talked into ordering at
least 1, 166. We could not sell it. Then New
Holland offered dealers a large discount to be able to
sell. 3 farmers on the edge of town went together
and bought the only one. It was a good baler for
many years for them. A couple years ago I asked
if they still had it, but they had sold it and
seemed to know about the one selling for many
thousand. Chuck

There seem to be a few of them around out here. Freeman still makes self propelled and are tough balers. I know where this one is, found it when looking at a tractor last spring. Could have bought one for $600 locally a few years ago, but waited too long.

They claim 29 left.

Here's one of 'em on display at the Canandaigua NY "Pageant of Steam" a couple years ago.

I like the looks of them and to me the 66 they were built was the best baler made. There biggest problen was in the drive train and those small drive wheels. With those 16" tires you could not pull a wagon traction wise and at that time nobody wanted to dump the bales on the ground. If they would have had at least a 7:50x24" tire would have worked a lot better but that would still have been too small. That 7:50x24" was drive size tire on our first self propelled combine.

(quoted from post at 17:40:51 01/30/14) First one pictured is different than the second one. Are they both the same model and how many years did New Holland make them??
It looks like there were at least 3 different models....

That baler in Bagley brought $17500 and was in amazing good original condition. I was at that farm before, wish I would have known that baler was there! Of course the owner wouldn't have wanted to sell it like every other good thing he had.

I know where there are 2 of the newer 178 models. The 166 was pretty rare, yes. I had heard that an Amish farmer had one he pulled with horses, on steel wheels, but never got to see it.

There was one at an auction in Whitelaw, WI that was spectacular. I missed the boat on it, and probably couldn't justify paying what it would have sold for. Around here, they aren't that rare, but the guys who have them think they are worth a lot. I'm not saying I expect anyone to give one away, especially one in great condition, but, I think some guys get carried away.

here's a pic of the one in WI at an auction.

I wish I could have bought that one! She's a beaut...

Want a new self propelled baler? Freeman builds them. Neighbor has a 3 year old 14x18 baler, John Deere cab and 175 hp motor, it regularly bales 700, 70 lb bales per hour. I would estimate that the baler has baled about 15,000 Tons.

Howdy,

Thanks for the info and replies everyone. I think when I get to go over to look this guy's stuff over I am going to see if he will sell it. It is in pretty rough shape but like other machines that I've bought in that shape, would be worth bringing back to life. Especially if there are so few left. It is an sp-166. Who knows, might find some other neat stuff at this place too just hiding in a shed. I'll post back when I make it over there. God bless.
